Hey all,
just wanted to tell everyone about the sailing that i've been doing for the past 4 weeks. I only have 1 week left before i go to my other house in Santa Fe, New Mexico next friday.
Me and my friends had one heck of a time out sailing in the Hudson River in New York City. Not only did i have fun doing man overboard drills, my counselor Kate Davella, went all the way to the stern pulpit and let herself off the boat (don't worry, we were in this little area between Ellis Island and the Fuel Marina just off of Jersey City, New Jersey) and yelled, "MAN OVERBOARD!!!!". So the next thing i did was point at her so the helmsman could know where she is and sailed 3 boat lengths away from her we let go of the Jib released the mainsail with the main halyard and tacked to a Close Haul to get back to her. On the way there, as the boat was keeling to the port side, i was holding onto the shrouds(the metal lines on the sides of the sailboat) and i slipped and screamed, i also held onto a sheet(sailing term for rope) and got up. I was fine.... still am. The helmsman asked if i was ok. Kate saw and heard the whole thing.
We got her back on the boat and headed back for the Marina. I asked her if she saw what happened to me and she said yes. She thought that we where going to have to get her and then me if i had fallen in. And switch the helmsman while we where doing just that.
Also, on my first week there, on friday, all the new kids(myself included) had to take the exam. And i passed it. I'am now a certified sailor by the American Sailing Association(ASA). and then yesterday, i taught a man overboard lesson, but then i got kicked out because i missed a minor step. well anywho, i'm gonna go and practice throwing the football with my doorman. see ya.
Bye for now,
Carla
