By: T.J. Marchetti about 4 years ago

Editor's Note: We have removed this drill from the library since many youth football leagues consider it dangerous to their players.

Bull in the ring is only dangerous if you run it wrong. For us, it is not a tackling drill, just a contact/aggression drill and to teach proper form when shedding a block. Here's how I run it:

      1. The circle is no more than 10 yards in diameter, which give the athletes only 5 yards to approach the man in the middle.

      2. We emphasize same foot-same shoulder technique which puts the athlete in the proper position to hit and be hit.

      3. The bull just rotates and calls "you" to the player he wants to hit. That player only moves when he hears you, and sees the bull point at him.

      4. Each player only gets 5-6 shots before he leaves the ring.

Again, this is not your traditional "bull" where he is a tackler or ball carrier and he has to get out of the ring. It's modified for taking on blocks and hitting/aggression. Heres how to teach tackling:

I play high school football now and I have not used this drill since pee-wee football. There's plenty of other drills you can do that are not only a lot more productive, but safer.

"Bull-In-The-Ring" incorporates one of the most dangerous (and statistically unproductive) types of drill. That prohibition concerns ANY drill that simply runs players at each other, with resultant extremely violent contact. In addition, a player can be struck from behind, at full speed. May "B-I-T-R" RIP

just imagine being in the ring for more han 5 minutes. if you try to walk, trust me, you will fall.

    • February 15, 2011

One time my coach kept me in the ring for like... 2 minutes. No lie. After that i could barley walk!!!

    • November 05, 2010

im not a big fan of the drill but i dont know

    • November 03, 2010

Bull in the ring should not have been removed. i am still playing youth leagu but i never got hurt doing this drill. no body on my team ever got hurt eighther. that was just a stupid thing to do. who ever was the big the brain ibn removing the drill is a complete EDIOT. IT NEVER CAUSED ME ANY TROUBLE DO ANYTHING it actually help me improve on my tackling really if it wasnt for that drill i would have never made linebacker, saftey or any tipe of defense. so all i can say is wow why would they remove bul in the ring.

    • September 16, 2010

      its just regular tackling

    • August 22, 2010

wow i done bull in the ring when i played pop warner... and i have been using this drill for 8 years and never had a injury to my self or kid....

    • August 18, 2010

Good call on removing this drill. Often misused and abused especially in youth football. Better alternatives.

    • May 02, 2010

we did the bull in the ring before the superbowl and it got us so pumped up our best player broke his big toe on the first play of the game

    • March 31, 2010

The problem is that it's not a bad drill if ran properly, but you get inexperienced Dads out there and injuried happen, then lawsuits happen.
I do what Danny Encinas suggested below, but we call it the Sumo Drill
and the kids LOVE IT !

    • February 20, 2010

      I'm ready to rock!

    • January 24, 2010

    • December 01, 2009

this drill ain't dangerous, it's a signof heart if you stay up
      LOL

    • November 26, 2009

      I feel pumped!

    • November 08, 2009

It's not legal in our conference anymore. I tweeked the drill and call it king of the ring. Two guys enter the ring till one drive the other out of the circle. The rest of the team make up the circle and yell and cheer on their teamates.

    • October 18, 2009

Removed? Why? This is a football site....Whats the deal? Put it back up! Great drill.

    • October 16, 2009

      Good luck!

    • October 16, 2009

      Awesome!

    • October 15, 2009

the bull in the ring is very fun except when i got blown up by sam cole.that hit dinged me up alot

    • October 11, 2009

I think its a good drill to fire them up. If leagues thinks its to dangerous there not coaching the kids

    • October 07, 2009

It bring the man out in some and the girl out in others.

    • October 06, 2009

I would like to say that i use the bull in the ring drill at least once a week. however, the reasons it was banned was because the coaches were leaving one kid in the ring and continually sending in kids at a very fast pace to hit the bull. bad situation.

    • September 14, 2009

I have to agree with George on this one, but it concerns me that this has been banned. I'd like to know how kids are getting hurt. We use this drill and have never had an injury. Maybe we do it differently. My kids ask to do it at every practice.

    • September 12, 2009

i think its stupid they removed it

    • September 10, 2009

Theres nothing in the comments saying why it so be removed

    • September 02, 2009

      Don't be so Nancy.

    • August 26, 2009

      Awesome!

    • August 22, 2009

excellent drill for beginners it almost forces the issue by keeping them in the middle untill they stop someone great when i played and it still works

    • August 18, 2009

I've been involved in youth football for 36 yrs, playing and coaching. ALL contact drills are prone to injury. you must teach proper technique for each drill, which in turn will help prevent injuries on and off the playing/practice field. start slow!

    • August 15, 2009

Never do this drill...in the hands of the wrong coach you could be visiting a player in the hosital while he is being fitted for a wheel chair. This is bad news and it teaches football players nothing.

    • August 02, 2009

      Mr. Campbell,
We used that drill when I was a kid (now 37) NEVER had an injury. However, If you do get an injury from the drill. You will be in big trouble. Please be sure you think long and hard before doing that drill.

just took on head coach roll for my sons football team 1st @ 2nd graders.Need some help on some practice drills and some offensive and defensive plays.I would appreciate it

    • July 23, 2009

Bull in the ring works in small groups monitored by 1 coach. It only becomes dangerous when people do not work the drill correctly.

    • July 22, 2009

Bull in the ring is banned by pop warner. Be very careful running this drill

    • July 18, 2009

BULL IN THE RING IS SO FUN

    • May 06, 2009

You do realize that this drill is banned in several youth leagues, colleges, semi pro & pro levels due to the high risk of injury that can happen to those who participate?
