    Brad Moberg asked:

At what age do you introduce strength training to young athletes?

    Dan’s answer:

Bob, do you have a site that has info to start up a basic routine and evolves from there? I need something for the summer. When wrestling season starts, we want to stay on the mat as much as possible. Wrestlers tend to cramp up during matches if they h... Continue reading »

    Brad Moberg asked:

At what age do you introduce strength training to young athletes?

    Dan’s answer:

If you have that kind of program, you are fortunate. I do know the odds of injury in a calisthenics routine are greatly reduced. Like weight lifting, it still takes a daily discipline if it's going to be effective. As you already know, a self motivated... Continue reading »

    1. I agree, coaches are the key. The more we can educate the importance and what the focus should be on for strength training the better.

I wrestle in the 152 weight class. It's my first year wrestling and im a sophomore in highschool. im tall and not too strong. any tips?

    Dan’s answer:

just 5 push ups. all the way down, chest to the floor then all the way up. Do this before each meal. Do not hold you breathe or you'll get a headache. After a week, go for ten. Add 5 every week or two. Next thing you know, you're up to 100 push ups no... Continue reading »

    1. by the way, my most tenacious competition were the tall skinny guys. Don't believe the muscle myth about wrestling. Still go for the push up though. Somewhere in the mix, eventually add some pull up, chin ups, sit ups and dips. A wrestler should never have to lifts weights. No amount of time in the weight room can do what the same amount of mat time can do.

    Roland Leos asked:

How do i safely cut weight?

    Dan’s answer:

don't cut weight. Just get good. I've been on both sides. Extreme weight loss and zero weight loss. Zero weight loss is better. I wrestled for four years before finding out I was not out of shape, I just didn't have the energy to get though practice. W... Continue reading »

    Brad Moberg asked:

At what age do you introduce strength training to young athletes?

    Dan’s answer:

I knew a guy that could bench 450 but couldn't do 50 push ups. His pecks kept his broken collar bone in place in the state finals (not a joke) but he couldn't run 5 miles. His opponent in the finals was out of shape too. In short, strength is depleted ... Continue reading »

    Crystal Zimmerman asked:

why cant us women get the same credit as guys in wrestling and why cant the guys try everytime we wrestle them?

    Dan’s answer:

I can appreciate why waiting until higher levels or older age to wrestle a different gender. That doesn't solve the problem though. For some girls, participating in sports gender specific is not a fit for them. They want real competition. If a girl has... Continue reading »

    August Klesh asked:

What is the youngest age a child can start in a wrestling club?

    Dan’s answer:

I love the sport, I wish the governing body of wrestling would just keep it simple. Since you can't sift out the purveyors "performance weight loss" just install a permanent fix. Let's have weight outs and weigh ins. You make weight before a match and ... Continue reading »

    1. I know it would make ALOT of people very angry, but I agree. What other way is there to be sure these kids are weighing in at THEIR actual weight? Stay in shape, eat right, maintain your weight. I know it's not that simple but at the same time, it is.
