1. Tardy On Blogging

Apologies for my blogging absence.  Family issues and work have had me swamped in the last few weeks.

I've been thinking a great deal about Weplay lately.  We continue to make good progress in several areas, particularly in the areas of social interaction and messaging so I hope you've noticed our new features.  I won't make this an informercial about new features though, the Weplay blog can do that.  But I would like to say that my mantra moving ahead is "Communication, Connection and Media" and really reaching out to our users.  Without our users, we don't matter.

What does that mean to say Communication, Connection and Media?   It means that Weplay is much more than an application for simply managing a team.  It's designed  to allow players, parents and coaches to connect and share the youth sports experience in a way that fundamentally unique.

In coming weeks and months you'll see several new features that will continue to make it easier for teammates to communicate, even for kids <13 (with parental permission), easier to find friends and share media on Weplay.   The point is to help the millions of kids and parents involved in youth sports share the experience of playing or helping a child play on a team.  That's a big part of why we're here.

There is a newsletter coming out today which explains what's new on Weplay, but rest assured that in coming weeks and months you'll notice a subtle (or not so subtle) shift in our direction and communication.  The objective being to help our users understand the power they have on Weplay.  From the ground up, Weplay was designed to allow every user to participate in their group.

Youth sports is inherently a social experience.  Between parents and between kids.  It's also an experience that is captured through the images and videos that parents want to share and save.  We're trying to help you more easily do all of those things.  Communicate, connect and share media.  That's what we're here to help you do.

So if you haven't done so already, become "friends' with other parents on the team, or your teammates.  Upload and share your photos and videos.  Explore the many ways you can message friends or teammates.

We've created something unique for youth sports.  We really hope you like it and hey, tell a friend!
  2. Haircut Day

Last night about 8PM my ex-wife had forwarded me an e-mail about the commencement of Fall Football at Jserra High School.  Included in the e-mail was the upcoming schedule and a long list of  upcoming events, etc. (These guys obviously need Weplay, but that will be a future post). Reading the e-mail i noticed that Friday was a  pretty big day for the Football Team. Aside from the first day of 2x a  day practices, a sleepover for the entire team, at 10AM there was something called "Haircut Day" scheduled.

As I read the words "Haircut Day", I couldn't help but wonder....... if this was anything like the distant memory of my high school football team and the shaved heads sported by the entire team around the commencement of the fall semester.  If that were the case Friday would be a memorable day indeed.

I immediately went to the school website and dug around for awhile until I found the section of the website devoted to the Football Team and sure enough there was a link to "2008 Haircut Day" which I immediately clicked with anxious anticipation. After waiting a few seconds for my FIOS connection to kick in,  guess what??? "No access, password required". Drat!!  Adjacent to the error message though was a name and telephone number, which I promptly dialed.

Now for context, I have been suggesting to Connor for about the last 2 years that he cut his hair and to put it mildly have gotten a chilly response so I had a pretty good idea that if my instincts were even directionally correct this boy was in for a fairly unpleasant shock.

As I walked downstairs to find my 6'2" 15 year old my i noticed that I already had received a voice mail from the Team Mom giving me the details for the big day. As I listened to the message, my jaw dropped.  "Total buzz for Freshman, 1/8 inch for Sophomores and 1/4 inch for Juniors and Seniors!"

I'll save you the graphic details but the following 30 minutes were full of lively dialogue, disbelief, shock, horror, near tears, more shock and horror, threats ("I'll quit Dad, I swear I will")... Then ultimately, acceptance.

At about 11:10 this morning, my "little boy" walked up to the front of the line as the second player out of over 100 calmly sat down and got his hair cut, and I do mean cut. When it was over he rubbed his head, kinda looked at me, like what's the big deal dad? and it was over. I was really proud of him.

Raising kids is a long, tough road. Baby steps and little victories.

Today my son took a step forward and i was really proud of him. He learned that sometimes sport requires sacrifice and that he is a member of a team and that as members of the team they all share something as simple as being identified by a haircut. But they're a team and that's what counts... even on Haircut Day.

  3. The beginning of football season, at least in Southern California and Casa Hansen

This morning in the pre-dawn darkness of our happy home, I was awoken by the sounds of large feet clomping around the second floor.  I was momentarily confused..  Was this an intruder, Frankenstein, a bad dream, all of the above?  As my head begin to clear, there was a knock on my door "Dad, you up yet?" sounded a familiar voice.  It was my son Connor.  And then it hit me... today is the first day of Summer High School Football.  Mark the day (August 14, 2009), note the time (4:59 am) the 2009 Football season has arrived at Casa Hansen.

As I crawled into the car and Connor gathered his gear for the 45 minute drive to his new school we both knew that this day, at some level would change our lives.  The beginning of an exciting new chapter.  Connor is attending a new school, meeting new teammates, new coaches and learning a new way of life.  2X a day practices, "Haircut Day" (the subject of a whole blog post later today!), weight rooms, playbooks, sleepovers, fundraisers, sweat, blood, passion and hopefully, self confidence, self respect, sportsmanship, and some fantastic memories and friendships.

All of us parents sacrifice for our children.  We work late, get up early, do without.  It's just the way it is.  But despite the pre-dawn darkness, cobwebs in my head, a sleeping 15 year old next to me on that long drive to the first practice, I had a smile on my face and couldn't imagine any place else that I'd rather be!

  4. Summertime at Weplay

As we slip into the middle of summer here at Weplay many of our members are off on vacation, visiting the Grand Canyon, Disney World or just chillin' for a couple of months.  Last summer we were quite new and really didn't know what to expect.  This summer it has been really interesting to watch our traffic ebb and flow with the end of the school year, the July 4 holiday and the wind down of many teams for the summer.  What has been a pleasant surprise is how many coaches have already turned their attention to Fall sports and Weplay continues to grow.
In the last 24 hours we had almost 150 new teams join weplay!  Very cool for middle of summer.

Last week we released our new "Roster" feature to make the job of adding Parents and Kids much easier for the Coaches and Parents managing teams on Weplay.  The initial feedback has been good, but will know after we actually announce the feature to our members.  Yesterday we released our first game, "Grand Slam Derby".  Again, we haven't highlighted it until we've had a chance to test it a bit, but I can tell you that it's already getting a lot of play!  To find the game, just pull down the "play" tab in your top nav bar and let's see another high score.  my personal best is 18,700 an ross was over 19,000 so good luck!

On a personal note, I've been struggling with a son on a new football team at a new High School, so for those parents out there I'm feeling some serious pain right now.  Practice 4 days a week at 6:15 AM......?  I mean 6:15?  OUCH!!

I know i sound like a broken record, but between now and the middle of October there is much in store for Weplay users.  We're doing a dashboard re-design, making the team application easier to use, working on communication tools and a bunch of other stuff.  Stay tuned because while Summer is vacation time for most, it sure isn't for us.  In fact, i had to bring my bike to work and put it by my desk to remind me to get out and exercise... before going back to work.  (I really do need some balance..)
  5. I Can't Help Myself

Ok, a couple of other quick but important things..
First, I really want us to improve the dashboard to make it more helpful and easier to use.  Anthony and Josh from our team have come up with a design that i really think has promise.  I'm not sure when we'll be done with it, but I'm hoping in two or three weeks.  The design will be "smart" enough to know what content you'll like to see help you more easily discover the stuff on the site that matters to you most.

It's already really good, so now we just need to finish designing it and get it built.

Last but certainly not least, I'm also very focused on making it more intuitive for new users to understand the power of Weplay.  We've built a great technology, but in our hurry to get you the best technology, we haven't done a great job of making it easy to understand what you can do with it.

So with that, I'll stop.. for now..

  6. Busy Days at Weplay

I've actually sat down two or three times in the last couple of weeks to update my blog.  I'm always a bit torn about the objective of the posts.  This post is telling you about the new stuff on the site and some stuff that is coming.  First off, we did a "deploy" last night, which is the point at which we launch new stuff into Weplay.  We normally choose Thursday night because it corresponds to how our software team's development process works.  We've been working on some stuff that is a big step forward, some apparent, some less so.  I thought it worth a moment to include an image of one of our dev guys (Brian).  Users see a site that is graphically rich, but our development team lives in a world that looks very different.  That said, that's how the magic happens.

Generally within Weplay I believe we need to get better at helping our group organizers communicate with their members.

In our effort to help people get notified about things happening within their teams and groups we included a feature where e-mail notifications were automatically sent when there was activity in the group.  We started hearing almost immediately that people were suddenly getting tons of e-mail from Weplay.  For the record, unnecessary e-mail bothers me as much as anyone, so we totally understood when our users started telling us how they felt.

Last night we released our "email digest' feature, that bundles all the group activity into one daily e-mail per group.  The group organizer can override that feature when it's important, but with luck, you'll be seeing far less e-mail "noise" from Weplay in the future.

We've also included a new feature called "e-mail your group", which allows a group organizer to click a button and send an email to the entire group automatically!  It's been live less that 24 hours and already being used by hundreds of groups.  Very cool stuff.

Next in line will be a "Roster" feature that allows the group organizer to input player information.  The Roster will be tied to a "Contact Manager" that allows the group organizer to keep track of players, parents, and anyone else they choose for e-mailing, etc.   Seems that one big pain point that we can fix.  With a bit of luck you'll see that in the next couple of weeks.

At the risk of annoying our Head of Product, TJ, i'll just say that we'll have our first games up for kids.

We also have a Soccer game as well, so get ready..

All in all, a good couple of weeks on Weplay, but lots more in the pipeline!

    Back at you soon..
  7. So Much To Do, So Little Time...

First of all i apologize for having not posted in three weeks. The last three weeks have been, well, the best of times and the worst of times. Like many startups, in order to weather the economic tsunami outside we've made some adjustments to our cost structure (the bad news), but the good news is that we are really well positioned, well funded and have a clear path for the future.
Fort those with an interest, the business is doing very well. We have over 165,000 members and 14, 000 groups on weplay now and continue to grow week over week. Our users are telling us what they think and we are reading every e-mail and listening. We can't get to everything overnight, but some clear themes have emerged and we're working hard to react to the feedback.
Reading the feedback from our members is always great. It's not always easy, because we really want to make everyone happy, but it helps us a ton. We're using that feedback to set priorities for our development team over upcoming weeks and months and we're already starting to see the improvements. Our engineers have created some amazing things in recent weeks like the Weplay Map, Answers, Skills and Drills, speeding up the site and most recently the ability for our members to talk directly to each other through the "Write A Friend" feature.

It's just a start and we will continue to get better. Know that our team is up late at night and over weekends to make Weplay great. At the risk of tipping our hand, we have a bunch of new stuff coming for kids, including games and points, and near and dear to my heart, a module that will make it easier for Coaches to e-mail their parents and players.

We just wrapped our Derek Jeter promotion and have a very cool opportunity for our Weplay users to win a chance to play basketball with LeBron... once the playoffs are over.

Let us know what you think and stay tuned for an exciting next few months.
  8. A Good Day For The Home Team

It's really exciting to watch as Weplay continues to grow. We've introduced a number of "community" elements that our members seem to really enjoy. Answers; ProFiles; new sport hubs; our Map... and will continue to make the site and the experience better each week.
Looking at our numbers, we've been growing at a pretty good clip lately (yesterday being a huge day), despite Spring Break and Easter Holidays as people and teams ramp up for spring sports. I love the level of activity on the site and as we look ahead to May, June and July things like games for kids (my personal best on the baseball game is 9,400), a better e-mail solution for people on teams, the ability for members to be able to communicate directly with each other and much, much more. Anyway, Thanks to everyone for using Weplay and we're busy making it better. Lot's to do, but we're well on our way. Please let us know what you think or want. We're working hard so you can play more..

  9. Playing Time- An Important Lesson

So Friday my son Connor had a game.. He's a freshman and doesn't have too much baseball experience. He's now been to months of practice, conditioning drills and games and to show for it, one at bat and one strike out. He began the season with high hopes, tons of enthusiasm and a fierce desire to play. Over the ensuing weeks, as he rode the pine i watched the excitement fade and the desire turn to apathy. I went to every game, and sat in the sun for hours with the hope that the team would play well and that my son would get his chance to get on the field. To be rewarded for the sacrifice and hard work. When he did get his first chance, as DH, he took 4 pitches, swung at the 5th and struck out. He walked to the dugout, head bowed, but committed to get a hit the next time at bat. That chance never came. In the last 7 games, he hasn't had an at bat or stepped onto the game field. Despite the fact that his team has lost 6 out of the 7 games. His job is to root for his teammates, clean up the dugout, shag foul balls and go to every practice and every game.
As we discussed the situation on the drive home Friday night, he wanted to quit. He had had enough. During that long drive home we discussed that sometimes you must pay your dues and that life isn't always fair. Sometimes things don't go your way. Sometimes you have a boss that you don't like and rather than giving up, sometimes it's better to work harder, even though it can be unpleasant.

Being a parent and being a kid are tough sometimes. Life can be hard and unfair, but that's just how things go. There are lots of lessons to be learned from sports. Some good, some bad, but hopefully valuable. Sports can be a metaphor for life and as parents we need to help our kids navigate the experience and grow.

We went to the part Sunday and played, i hit them ground balls and generally laughed and had fun. The coach has told Connor that he has a good chance to play this week, mainly because the team has been eliminated from playoff contention. It's hard. Hard for the coach, hard for the kids and hard for the parents. But it isn't about winning and losing. The messages to be derived from sports mirror life and will serve my son well in later years.

There is much to be learned through playing a sport in the development of a child, and to some degree the development of a parent as well. Not always fun or easy, but important none the less.
  10. Happy Birthday To Us

I always marvel at where we are in the world today. Get up at 6 AM, look at the ceiling for a moment trying to remember what city you're in.. Usually it's the noise that reminds me. Horns and sirens in NYC, waves in CA. Yesterday was Monday and I was heading back to Long Beach to be Mr. Mom for the next seven days, before heading off to either New York or Tampa next week.
The thing that struck me was the fact that a guy can get up in NYC, walk across the street for coffee in 29 degree weather, do a couple of meetings, a bunch of phone calls, land, a couple of more calls, a meeting, a bunch of e-mails then, look outside and watch the sunset over the pacific. Dunno, just seems kinda cool, albeit painful at times.

But, know what? it's worth it. Because in addition to today being our birthday (a year since open beta), today we launched ProFiles, which I'm very excited about. It's a new area within weplay where we've centralized all the great content from our professional athletes. Still a few bugs to work out, but the guys did a fantastic job. I am really anxious for our users to easily see the great stuff we have of Peyton, Derek, Jennie, Shaun... all of them. It's one of the things that makes weplay special. Kids need to be reminded that Derek started on a field in Kalamazoo and Peyton in his back yard (stepping on dog poop playing with Eli and Cooper)..

Special thanks to the team that was cranking on the latest round of features, March and April will be very big months for us. We have a few things up our sleeve to let a few more people know about weplay, but what excites me most is the momentum that is building within the existing member base.

A very nice first birthday present indeed! A great site, a strong team, good momentum and most of all, over 120,000 members now. Good things ahead for weplay. Oh yeah, i think we had another very big day today. Thanks to everyone and well, Happy Birthday to US!!!
