So after last week's excitement around Ryan Howard's run to the World Series title, this week's weplay pro athlete news is naturally a little bit of a letdown. But that doesn't mean they were sitting around doing nothing.
Brandi Chastain certainly wasn't sitting around doing nothing. Quite the opposite. She ran in her first marathon and finished! Even for the world-class soccer star, running 26.2 miles in the New York Marathon was a grueling challenge. But it was all for a good cause, ING's Run for Something Better program, which promotes youth fitness and provides funding for community and school-based running programs across the country.
Tony Parker wasn't just sitting around last night waiting for his team to fall to 0-4... The San Antonio Spurs did open their season with three straight losses, looking stuck in their on Opening Night to the Suns, then again on Friday night in Portland, 100-99, and a loss to intra-state rivals in Dallas on Tuesday night. (The 0-3 start is San Antonio's worst start in 35 years.) But then something happened to Tony Parker... he got angry! Last night in Minnesota, Parker poured in 55 points and threw in 10 assists to help San Antonio (1-3) get off the schneid with a 129-125 double-OT win over the Wolves. Parker joined Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James as the only NBA players to have at least 50 points and 10 assists in a game.
Speaking of Lebron James... the Cavaliers (3-2) have been playing much better since their opening night loss in Boston. James scored 22 in the team's first win of the season over Charlotte last Thursday. His good buddy Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets knocked LeBron's Cavs around on Saturday, winning 104-92, but King James and crew bounced back to net a rare win in Dallas on Monday night. Last night, though, was James' best performance of the season thus far. He finished with 41 points, nine rebounds and six assists in a 107-93 win over the Bulls. It's gotta be the shoes... the Zoom LeBron VI are here!
Speaking of winning and losing, our two NFL pros split their weekend worth of games, with Peyton Manning and the Colts (4-4) getting back to .500 and knocking off the New England Patriots while Shaun Alexander's Redskins lost to the Steelers on Monday night. Of course, not all is lost in Washington! The Redskins (6-3) and have a bye week before facing the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, November 16. Indy heads to Pittsburgh this week as Peyton looks for some weplay payback on a Steelers team that held Shaun Alexander in check.
Of course, the buzz around Ryan Howard and Phillies has not yet died out, at least not for his family. What's more, the core of the team could be together for years to come. Though if Phillies fans want to know the real secret behind the World Series title, the answer might be lots of $5-footlong sandwiches.
