Relatively coaches like Coach Teresa often face many challenges as they begin to figure out exactly what it is they are doing. How to organize the parents and kids, planning practices, teaching and perfecting skills... good thing she had weplay to keep it all together : )

Then again, it's not like Teresa is a newcomer to her sport. Although the 2008 season was Coach Teresa's first year as the CK Youth Cheerleading Coach, with teams of 4th, 5th, 6th grade girls, she is a certified cheerleading coach with the National Youth Sports Coaches Association. She is also drawing on her experience as a former high school cheerleader and team captain at Claysburg Kimmel High School.

In just a few months, she raised thousands of dollars for uniforms, a mascot costume, new signs and megaphones. All the girls have learned basic partner stunt skills, several pom routines and nearly 100 different cheers.

"The secret to coaching youth sports for me is to make EVERYTHING about the KIDS," Coach Teresa says. "To always be honest and caring but most of all make sure ALL of the kids are having fun!"

Coach Teresa is a full-time mom, but also works in the travel industry as an independent consultant and is the co owner/operators of the Claysburg Pizza Shop and Wishee Washee Car Wash with her husband, Paul. Which means she's had real help in making her first season such a success, with a parent helper that she met this spring after our tryouts as well as two older cheerleaders (one junior high and the other varsity) that assist with at practices.

"Confidence levels have soared, leadership skills have improved and learning to work as a team instead of individuals is evident," she said.
