There's an old adage in sports: practice makes perfect. Actually there are a lot of old adages in sports. And I think most of them apply to golf. Golf is a sport that rewards those who practice and play often. It can be fun, frustrating, challenging and satisfying - all at the same time.

For me, golf is certainly all of those things and more as I've been playing long enough to hit some very good shots, but do not play often enough to hit many good shots that frequently. In fact, I'd say it's a pretty even split pretty into thirds. A third of the shots I hit are pretty good to great, another third of the shots are mediocre and the rest, including putts, are flat-out bad.

Putting together consecutive good shots is the goal, but getting it to happen for an entire hole is even harder. And an entire round? Forget about it.

More so than any other sport I have ever been involved with, golf is about muscle memory and repetition. Everything needs to work correctly at the same time for the ball to go where you want it to go. The more you hit, the better you'll ultimately get. Recognition of errors, correcting those mechanics and drumming them into your brain is the key to improvement.

But that also means you always need to be around someone who can help you recognize and correct those errors, which is not always easy either. No sport is more conducive for socializing and bonding with friends, but they're typically looking out for their own improvement and focusing on their personal game.

Long story short - golf is hard, I'm not good at it, it's frustrating yet addicting and I love it.
