Soccer Dad Fosters Humble Teams

Coach Bill Dwyer has been a soccer player all his life, and six years ago he took up coaching the sport he loves so much.  This soccer Dad from Dyer, Indiana truly understands the game as well as the concepts of coaching.

For this Coach of the Week, teaching sports is about much more than the game.  He wrote to Weplay, "Not only do I love soccer and coaching, but I enjoy creating and growing teams.  When the youth come together and just click together it is awesome.  When a player does well or not so well it is the result of the team not one player or a coach. "

Coach Dwyer is the head coach of the U8 Dyer Wolves, who are undefeated so far this season.  More than winning, Coach Dwyer is proud of his players' humility.  He shared his excitement writing that after a game the boys on his team will talk up each other rather than what they did, and also talk about the great plays the opposing team had.  He said he most looks forward to the days when he can see the kids smile and say, "Look what I learned today!"

Coach Dwyer has two children who both play soccer, and at least for now, love it as much as he does.  While he has an obvious passion for soccer, he wrote, "Whatever my children are doing I will try to be part of their lives."

Believing that "the best teachers are the adults that are positive role models," this Coach of the Week wanted to thank his players' parents as well as his wife.  "They all come out to support the team and are willing to be part of practice if need be."

If you ever forget what you are doing as a coach, keep in mind Coach Dwyer's suggestion.  He believes that it is crucial for coaches to help youth think on their own.  That means don't always tell them what to do, but make sure to encourage them when they do it right.

"..crucial for coaches to help youth think on their own. That means don't always tell them what to do, but make sure to encourage them when they do it right." That is one of the most important things we should convey to parents and young coaches.
