This week's Coach of the Week is an award winning bowling coach who has been bowling for 38 years! Coach Jeff Frye of New Jersey knew he had a passion for bowling at a young age, and has since channeled it to provide opportunities for youth bowlers. Wanting to give back to the sport of bowling, and in an effort to provide today's young bowlers with positive experiences, he's become a USBC Silver Coach and USBC Youth Committee member, among many other roles.
While Coach Frye's involvement with the bowling community is part-time, independent of his full-time job, he approaches his leadership roles with gusto and passion. He prides himself on his "ability to envision the end point while standing at the starting line" and believes that "positive thoughts lead to positive results."
Coach Frye started out at the local level becoming the Director at the Morris County (NJ) Local Youth Bowling Association. He was then elected to the NJ State Youth Bowling Association where he could share his ideas with a larger audience. That position allowed him to take over the State's Annual Youth Championship Tournament and transform it into one that provides thousands of dollars in scholarship money to youth bowlers annually.
Coach Frye works to provide youth bowlers with the opportunity to earn national recognition for their bowling abilities, to improve their networking abilities and to shine a spot light on wonderful bowlers to college coaches and other prominent and influential people within the bowling industry at a national level.
Coach Frye also serves on the USBC's Youth Committee, which has implemented landmark changes in the past year. Apart for involvement with many bowling associations Coach Frye has pursued professional coaching certifications and joined the PBA, all contributing in his effort to stay true to his passion and give back to the sport and its youth participants.
For the past ten years Coach Frye has also volunteered as a coach at Oakwood Lanes' Saturday morning bowling programs. He would show up early and provide individual assistance to anyone who wanted some extra help.
The list just goes on and on with Coach Frye, who took a season off from coaching to speak with High School athletic directors about establishing bowling programs at their schools.
This week's Coach of the Week joyfully wrote, "There's no describing the feeling of pride when a youth bowler I've worked with seeks you out to identify a personal accomplishment in bowling, such as a 300 game, and says thank you for taking time to help them."
Coach Frye wanted to thank his wife who has been instrumental in his success and helps to keep him organized. He said that since the first year they attended Bowl Expo she's wanted to own a bowling center. She wrote, "who knows, maybe when my federal career ends a new one will bloom as a bowling center proprietor!"
