Keeping It Fun

So as I've been spending more time on Weplay and looking at what is going on, I realize that we are right in the middle of the basketball season not just for me, but for all of the kids out there playing in leagues and on teams all over the world. I was right there with you once, so believe me when I tell you that dreams do come true with hard work.

I think the most important thing for young players is understanding the game and basketball fundamentals. I'm not a coach, trust me, but there are these certain qualities you can see in some players that separate them. How do you know? I would look for basketball IQ and for a players feel for the game. A good attitude and work ethic is important too.

And of course they must enjoy playing. More than anything, I loved playing the game and wanted to play all the time. That's healthy, I think. I was never one who thought about quitting, not for one second. But you know what else I think is important is having a rounded experience - I played basketball, football (soccer as you call it :) and tennis growing up. I enjoy all sports, especially when playing with friends and family.

Having fun in sports is so important because not everyone is going to become a professional. My father was a professional basketball player in Europe and he instilled that competitive nature in me from a young age, but the game was always still fun to me. So no matter how good you are or how good you think you can be, my advice to you this basketball season is play for yourself and your friends and teammates. Don't worry about tomorrow.
