More Than Just a Football Player

I wasn't always just a football player. I also loved baseball growing up. It was my spring sport. Aside from football, I also played basketball all the way up through my junior year of high school.

I think I was about 8 years old when I first started playing organized sports. I actually started with the other two - baseball and basketball. I did the whole Little League and Pop Warner thing, all those, into the junior high teams and up to senior year of high school.

That year was the first time I actually had to make a decision. I started making recruiting trips on top of the football games, so I really just wanted to rest after the fall football season ended. So once basketball season came around, I went up into the crowd and cheered. It was so strange not being out there, but it was still fun in its own way.

So there went my basketball career. And then same thing happened with baseball that spring.

My three daughters are now getting to an age where sports might be something they could get into. They're all great athletes. Their mom played basketball and me with the football, they've certainly got it in them.

Heaven, my oldest daughter, and Eden, the youngest, are going to be a bit taller, so they might like volleyball or soccer or softball. The middle daughter is smaller, but could be a great gymnast. When she was turning two, I remember she once fell back off a chair and landed on her feet, totally stunning her mom and me. That's how I knew.

As Heaven gets to that age, I think she is going to start with soccer. But I don't know that I could jump right in to be a coach of their teams. It takes a lot and I might serve them better being the dad who cheers loud and supports them from the sidelines, just staying out of the way. Of course, if there was a need for a coach in one of the sports, I would definitely get into it.

I'm just really excited to watch them grow.
