  1. All About the Business

Hi weplay, Wishing a happy summer to you all. Summer is a time where we prepare to get ready for the next season, and I'm doing just that right now. One of the first lessons you learn when you become a professional athlete is that sports is a business. Sometimes it works out in your favor and sometimes you have to overcome different challenges. This is one of those times.

I will always love Seattle. I met my wife there and my family is there. Some great times. But this is business, and I understand that. In this league, you don't always get to pick the exact city you want to live in. So it's time to move on. But this isn't just unique to me, it happens to everyone no matter what profession you are in. Sometimes you just have to change jobs or switch schools because of events out of your control. The truth is that some coaches are leaving, my fullback is gone, half of my offensive line is already gone, so it was the right time for us to make this move anyway.

Because I broke my wrist, we knew that the offense had to change. I could no longer run to the left side. So it changed my game. So people kept asking me why my numbers and stats weren't the same last year, but that's only because I went from 27 carries per game to 12. My numbers were down because I had to split time. They should have been down.

So I'm as excited as ever because there is some inaccurate information about me out there, but I feel good. I'm healthy, running well and ready to play. But that's not why I play. It's not my style to prove the doubters wrong or clear up rumors. That's not my personality. It's just going to be an exciting year because I know what I can do on the football field. And I know what I do well. I just need to go out there and do it again.

I think my being healthy for my whole career up until last year raised the bar and threw everyone in Seattle off a bit. They didn't get why I wasn't playing on every play in every game or running for 100 yards and two TDs each game. It was good and bad - the good is that I set a high mark, but the bad was that I had to live up to that and not get hurt. So when I'd finish with 1400 yards and 18 TDs, I don't know if people realize how hard that was to do. I'm still so proud of that.

So I'm excited and looking forward to my next challenge. My goal is still to help a team win the Super Bowl. Or two of them.

  2. More Than Just a Football Player

I wasn't always just a football player. I also loved baseball growing up. It was my spring sport. Aside from football, I also played basketball all the way up through my junior year of high school.

I think I was about 8 years old when I first started playing organized sports. I actually started with the other two - baseball and basketball. I did the whole Little League and Pop Warner thing, all those, into the junior high teams and up to senior year of high school.

That year was the first time I actually had to make a decision. I started making recruiting trips on top of the football games, so I really just wanted to rest after the fall football season ended. So once basketball season came around, I went up into the crowd and cheered. It was so strange not being out there, but it was still fun in its own way.

So there went my basketball career. And then same thing happened with baseball that spring.

My three daughters are now getting to an age where sports might be something they could get into. They're all great athletes. Their mom played basketball and me with the football, they've certainly got it in them.

Heaven, my oldest daughter, and Eden, the youngest, are going to be a bit taller, so they might like volleyball or soccer or softball. The middle daughter is smaller, but could be a great gymnast. When she was turning two, I remember she once fell back off a chair and landed on her feet, totally stunning her mom and me. That's how I knew.

As Heaven gets to that age, I think she is going to start with soccer. But I don't know that I could jump right in to be a coach of their teams. It takes a lot and I might serve them better being the dad who cheers loud and supports them from the sidelines, just staying out of the way. Of course, if there was a need for a coach in one of the sports, I would definitely get into it.

I'm just really excited to watch them grow.

  3. Offseason Workout

I'm back with another update for you, this time I to talk about my offseason workout and how I've been keeping busy.

The truth is that despite my new situation and the number of years I've been in the league, my offseason workout has not changed at all. It is still the same every year. I haven't changed one aspect of my training. In my time with Seattle, they always gave me freedom to train in Seattle or elsewhere. So I spent much of my time working out on my own and didn't ever really return to Seattle until the middle or end of May. So that hasn't changed and I'm on track.

I'm still running and training at the local colleges and gyms in my area, which helps keep my competitiveness at a high level. There is always some guy who challenges me or thinks he's as fast as me and wants to run, some kid on a college campus who thinks he can stay with me. So it's always been like that, with a couple of guys I can train with and stay motivated. That's always how I start my offseason workout program a few weeks after a season ends and I've had time to relax a bit.

I also have a great coach who runs me all over the place. He trains Olympians, other athletes and really knows what he's doing. Right now, he's more fired up than ever because he's the kind of guy who gets offended if you doubt or speak ill of his guys. He's the one who wants to prove everything to the world of doubters. He trains me to put me on another level. I love that, because it pushes me to be better. I also love the challenges he puts before me.

So don't worry about me. I'm working as hard as I ever have.

  4. Ready for the Next Challenge

Whats going on everyone? I'm back home in Seattle right now and wanted to share a quick update for all my friends out there.

There is not any official news to report as of yet, but talks with teams are still progressing. I really am optimistic and welcome this latest challenge in my career just as I have all of the previous times that me or my skills have been questioned.

When I was in high school or college or even early on in the NFL, when people thought I wasn't going to be good, that's when I'd take it to another level. That's just how I am. I enjoy the challenge and I enjoy fighting to get to a place that is bigger and better.

That's how I feel right now. I am in a situation now where there is going to be a new team that wants me and wants to go to the Super Bowl. And I want a new team and I want to go to the Super Bowl. I'm just trying to figure out which of these teams I will be able to help win and rock the city.

So no matter where I go, I know it is going to work out really well. Where do you think I'll end be playing this season?

In the meantime, I'm working hard and doing what I can to enjoy the offseason. The workouts I've been doing have been great and I am healthy again. Though it's not all work all the time. My wife and I also like to plan trips with the kids where we're together as a family, whether it's jumping on a plane and taking a family vacation to Florida or spending a week in California. I'm grateful for the time we get to be together.

Hope everyone is doing well and having fun here on weplay. I'll be seeing you soon.

  5. The Draft and American Idol

I'm back with just a few more thoughts I wanted to share because I realize I forgot to mention the other big thing that's happened since I last wrote.

The NFL Draft, which was a few weeks ago, makes me think back to my own Draft year in 2000. It was obviously really exciting for me and my family, though I can only say that now looking back on it because there also was some drama.

So I was projected to be a top pick that year, one of the top players in my position to get picked, but once a few guys started to get taken, I was worried about dropping and becoming one of those sad stories. You don't ever want to be the last guy picked, but someone has to be.

A few running backs started to get taken and I was just waiting to hear my name. From like the 8th to the 19th pick, it was kind of uncertain what was going to happen next. Of course, it all worked out in the end.

Just another story in my NFL career. Actually the first story of my NFL career.

I was probably in my sophomore or junior year of high school before I even thought about the NFL, maybe like 16 years old. I didn't dream about it as a kid like other people do. It just wasn't a part of what I thought about or why I played, you know. I was just enjoying the moment.

At some point, my football coaches mentioned the idea of getting a college scholarship and playing after high school. So I was already a teenager when the seed was planted in my mind and the NFL was something I began to think about.

Now here I am all these years later.

One last thing - something I've been getting really into. American Idol. I've watching it big time. I missed last night since I was on the road, but I've been recording the episodes and staying pretty updated. As we get down to the last few singers, I see it as a two horse race. I like young David the best, his voice has that older, soulful style. He can hit those notes, but sing anything no matter what he's given. And I also like the other David, the rocker. That's my 1-2 if I had to pick it now. I'll be watching.

Ok, have to get back to the kids, but thanks again for reading. The best part about the offseason is just getting to be a dad, making breakfast, playing hide-and-seek around the house with my girls and having fun. But it's not all relaxation. I've been working harder than ever this offseason, though I'll save that for my next update. In the meantime, I dug up some old newspaper clips and photos that my family saved from when I was younger. Hope you enjoy them. Will check back in soon.

  6. Ready For A Fresh Start

Hi everybody, I hope you’ve all been having fun here on weplay. Looks like a lot more people have joined since I was on last – hope that keeps up. There’s also been a lot going on with me since my last update so let’s get cracking.

As you may have heard, I’m now a free agent for the first time in my career. That means I’m looking for a new team to play for next year. But the thing is, that’s not bad. It’s actually quite common and gives me the chance to explore all of the opportunities out there.

After some great years in Seattle with the Seahawks, I’m looking really forward to being in a new city with new teammates and all that entails.

At this stage in the game, I’m just flying around to meet with various NFL teams. It’s actually a pretty cool process. People ask what the meetings are like, whether I get nervous or if it’s like a job interview. And you know, it’s not really like a regular job interview like your parents might have. With a job interview, you really want to make a good impression to get a job offer.

With my experience, the teams know I can bring something good, too, meaning I’ve got leverage. So while they want to get to know me, I also want to get a sense for what team best fits my style and my needs.

To me, it is a lot like the college recruiting process all over again. They’re trying to impress you and get you to join their team. You know you will end up somewhere good, but you really want to make sure it’s the right somewhere for you. So now it is both exciting and stressful at the same time because it’s on me to make the right pick. I remember thinking… do I want to pick Alabama or Michigan or Notre Dame? It’s like that all over again.

I’ll be sure to let you know where I end up just as soon as I know.

  7. Off To A Running Start

The pictures and videos are up now, so it's gotta be time to Blog. Hello everyone, this is running back Shaun Alexander. I've spent the last eight seasons in the beautiful city of Seattle since being drafted by the Seahawks in 2000. But while I'm a cagy, experienced veteran running back on the field, this is my very first Blog entry.

One of the reasons I teamed up with weplay is because I love the idea that I can share my photos and videos with so many new people. I'm a social guy and love making friends everywhere I go. Well this is the ultimate place to connect with new people who share my love of sports. You may think I'm just a football guy, but I really do love watching and playing everything, and that started at a young age and has stuck with me through all these years.

You know, among the great lessons I learned in my time in the NFL, the ones that stand out are to keep working hard, make the most of your opportunities and never stop believing that life has something good in store for you. I didn't see much playing time as a rookie, but just one year later I led the NFL in touchdowns. By 2005, I was the Most Valuable Player in the league. Pretty crazy, right? But it all starts with my love of playing and helping my team win. That's what weplay.com is about

I don't want this to be all about me because I'm really here to get to know you all better. I'd love to hear what you have to say and see the pics and movies you post here.

Anyway, gotta run! Take care and see you on here real soon,

    -Shaun
