    Emily Benson asked:

how do i work on one hoppers

    Coach’s answer:

Keep practicing. A good drill to do alone is throw a ball against a wall and scoop it like your are playing 1st or fielding a ground ball. Rememer to follow the ball into your glove with your eyes and practice practice practice.

    William Cole asked:

What Are Some Good Off-Season Softball Conditioning Drills for Fielders?

    Coach’s answer:

One of my favorite is called pick -ups. You will need a partner for this one. Set up cones about ten yards apart. While you start in the middle of the cones have your parner roll a ball to one cone while you shuffle to pick it up. As you catch the ... Continue reading »

    William Cole asked:

How Do You Properly Break In A Softball Glove?

    Coach’s answer:

The best why to break in a glove is to play catch with it.

Put some conditioner on the glove (I still use shaving cream but I am "old" school) and play catch as much as you can. When you are not playing catch just throw a ball into the glove whil... Continue reading »

    Al Ciolek asked:

How old should a child be to start umpiring?

    Coach’s answer:

13-14 seems to be about the right age. The key as Lance stated about is the child's ablility. If they are confident and understand their job and have been trained well they shluld have no problem sans the unruly adult.

    Crystal White asked:

Tournament bracket process - determining seeding???

    Coach’s answer:

That is a good summary of the pool Al. To be more specific on the head to head explanation, if the teams had records, lets say teams A and B had records of 2-1 and C and D had records fo 1-2. If Team B beat Team A for one of their wins and Team C bea... Continue reading »

    Maria Elena Cruz asked:

anyone knows what is the average time running from home to first base? this pertains to girls 14under.

    Coach’s answer:

three seconds is average, 2.8 is good, 2.6 is great for a right hander
2.7-2.8, 2.5-2.6, and 2.3-2.4 respectively for a lefty. this is based on a standing start. Add about .05 with a swing.

    Bob Bayer asked:

What's the best way to defend a continuous walk in fastpitch with a runner on third base and nobody on second?

    Coach’s answer:

Like "plan A" above we throw the ball immediately back to the pitcher and watch the runner. We have the 2nd baseman come into the base path 3/4 of the way to 2nd. If the runner goes from 1st to 2nd we throw to the 2nd baseman when the runner is halfw... Continue reading »

    Amanda Baker asked:

what is the best way to practice fielding batting and all the other basics by myself?

    Coach’s answer:

Hitting off a tee is a great drill to do alone once you have been shown the proper swing. Practicing a bad swing does more harm than good. Wiffle balls are good to use if you don't have a screen to hit into. If you don't have a wall or pitchback to ... Continue reading »

    Troy Brast asked:

when over running first base can u turn left as long as u are not attempting to advance to second?

    Coach’s answer:

You can turn anyway you like as long as you don't make an attempt to advance to 2nd. the problem as stated above is that attempt is based on the umpires opinion. We teach out players to break down after the bag look over their shoulder for the ball a... Continue reading »
