1. Right Back At It Again

Monday means back to work or school today for a lot of you and we're no different. Well maybe a little different in that our schedule isn't exactly a 9-to-5 job. Sometimes I lose track of the days of the week. But as long as I know when we're playing and where, I'm good to go.

One thing I do know is that it's always great waking up in New York City. Opening up the new Stadium last week is a memory that I will keep with me forever. The park itself is obviously incredible, but seeing all of those great Yankees past and present together to usher in a new era was the highlight for me. So lots of memories over the past week full of high points and unfortunately even some low moments. But that's baseball

Couple of rough games mixed in there, but glad to be back on a winning track after yesterday. The first month of the season is always a feeling-out period, but we're coming together and know that it's a long way to the finish line.

There are a lot of great players on this team who have been around this league a long time, but we've also got some younger players, some guys new to New York. The thing that you try to relate to all the new guys is, you know, don't try to do anything differently. It's still the same game. Of course there's more attention here, more media, the fans expect maximum effort and you're under a microscope a lot more when you're playing in New York. But really, it's still the same game whether you're on AAA team or playing in New York. It's still baseball.

I think a lot of times people put unnecessary pressure on themselves as opposed to just going out and doing the things that made it possible for them to get to this point. So I just try to tell people to relax.

As a team captain, especially in our organization, I think you have a responsibility. You have a responsibility to the organization, your teammates, your coaches and the fans to represent yourself and the organization in the best light possible. Make sure that you try and think like them, that's first and foremost.

So that's the update from here. A few more games here at home with the A's we can hopefully put together a few wins in a row here before packing up again and heading to Boston this weekend. Stay tuned and have a good week.

  2. Opening Up on the Road

So big week for us... We've got an offday here in Baltimore as the new season started yesterday. It really is hard to believe it's been 14 years already since I got here, but some things don't change. A new year always starts with the same mission, and that's winning in October.

Goals don't change! My goal ever since I came up was to just do everything to help the Yankees win. That was true in 1995 and it's true in 2009. Everyone wants to have great seasons individually but the bottom line is that we go out there to compete and try to win a championship.

I learned early on, when we were winning a lot when I first came up with the Yankees, that helping Win the World Series is the only goals that we have. I believe that at the professional level, you only get better as a player individually when you're helping the team win.

We've now gotten a chance to spend some time in the new stadium and it is everything I hoped it would be, and more. I don't want to give much more away because I want people to come in and experience it like I did, soak it all in with no preconceived notions. I hadn't been there since right before Christmas, but it was great getting a few workouts and games there.

Now we're back on the road for a week, but can't wait to get back to New York for the official opening. It's going to be something special.

Until then, we've got business to take care of in Baltimore, KC and Tampa. And you can check out the contest they're running on Weplay where the winner gets to come and train with me for a day, a personal skills lesson that we'll also shoot and put on the Weplay site. It's already going on now I believe, so check it out.

Talk again when I'm back home,

  3. The Fun of Spring and Opening Day

Back as promised, another beautiful day in Tampa winding down and I'm glad to be back in the blogging rhythm... feels good. So another Spring Training is coming to an end in just a few days, which means we'll finally get to kick off the 2009 season. It's been a long time coming, I'll tell you that. Feels like I've been getting ready for this season to start for way too long.

Obviously this past offseason felt like it was a few weeks longer than usual because it was. The timing of everything made it feel different. For the first time in a long time, the Yankees didn't go to the playoffs. And then in order to get ready for the World Baseball Classic, I had to start doing my regular baseball preparation activities a little bit earlier. That means everything was pushed up about three weeks or so, lifting weights earlier, running earlier, hitting earlier, throwing earlier... it was all just moved up in order to be prepared a little bit earlier than a regular Spring Training.

What I really like about the Classic is that not only do you get to represent your country, but it's a lot of fun getting to play with the different players. You know, guys that you've been around a little bit, but never really been around for two or three weeks. It really is different than just playing with some of these guys in an All-Star game were you're there for two days. And even then, some of the guys you don't see too much of and you don't get an opportunity to talk to because you go into different directions.

I've been a member of the Yankees for my entire career. Almost 15 years. So while it may be kind of awkward at first, getting the opportunity to put personalities to people and get to know guys is a treat. You get to enjoy playing with them.

And let's be honest - Spring Training can get kind of long at times and we're playing for like six weeks and once you get a few weeks in, you're just ready to go. So for me, to be able to leave and go play some important games for Team USA and then come back for 10 games before we get going again, it's been a nice change of pace. No game, even if it's Spring Training, is ever meaningless, but the WBC was a real help for me not just in terms of being ready to play on the field. It really did break things up - and that can only help in terms of mental preparation too.

And after another week back at Spring Training, I'm feeling good. This time is always kind of laid back, much more so than the regular season because sometimes you don't play every day. Maybe you play five, six, seven innings then come out of the game. Which means it's more relaxed. And it's also about catching up, I mean I haven't seen a lot of my teammates for the entire offseason, so I've enjoyed really getting to interact with them again.

One week to go until Opening Day. And remember, we celebrate Opening Day on Weplay tomorrow morning - 8 a.m. on Good Morning America. And if I'm getting up that early, so should you. Talk soon,
    -Derek

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you all know that i got invited to appear on Good Morning America on Tuesday morning to talk about Weplay. Pretty cool. i'm still here in tampa but they're going to do it via satellite and we've got a little surprise planned then, so tune in around 8 in the morning.

And yes I know it's been awhile since the last update but I'm going to be much more diligent this season - you know how things get in the offseason. You're all right to get on my case for not blogging more, but I think i should have some free time tomorrow actually so I'll get back on then to go a little bit more into detail about what's going on.

So remember Tuesday morning on ABC. Catch it then. Talk more tomorrow,

  5. Falling Back into the Routine

Hey everyone, I'm back and sorry to have been gone for so long. It's been a few weeks since the season ended and I've been laying low and just resting up from the long season. I was on vacation, did some traveling, met up with and visited friends and family and am finally back in the Big Apple.

Now that I'm back, I've been catching up some things with my foundation, helping to plan some upcoming events and checking back in with my weplay friends. So many questions and comments I don't even know where to begin. I guess I should start with som older questions and wanted to get to those first. I'll then get to some of the newer ones in a few days. I guess it's my own fault for letting it go as long as I did...

Records come and go, but where does breaking Lou Gehrig's record for career hits at Yankee Stadium stand for you? -Devon, Bronx, N.Y.

It was very special to me. Anytime your name is mentioned alongside a legend like Lou Gehrig's, it's something special. Records are made to be broken, but this one at least, will always stand at the old Yankee Stadium.

How do you think Yankee fans and baseball fans alike will deal with the closing of Yankee Stadium? Does this represent an end to chapter of your life? -Gennifer, Rye, N.Y.

Yes, it definitely does. I grew up in Yankee Stadium so it feels strange knowing I won't be going back there in 2009, but the fans are what really made the place special. Their excitement will make our new stadium feel like home on Opening Day.

Hi Derek, Will any of your family members be attending these last few home games? - Phillip, Troy, MI

My entire family was there for the last home stand and it made the games even more special for me. My parents and sister Sharlee have always been such big supporters that I can't imagine them not having been there for the final home game.

What up, Big D! What are you plans for the off-season? Lots of commercials to shoot? What else do you do to relax? -Loni, Fort Myers, FL

Believe it or not, the offseason goes by really quickly. I take a little time to relax or to travel, and then I start working out again after about six weeks so I'm already back into my routine now.

Which reminds me... Gotta get going. I'm going to head out to work out now, but I'll be back...

  6. end of an era

It goes without saying, but this was obviously a special weekend for all of us - players, coaches, staff and especially the fans...

The last time we will ever play in Yankee Stadium. A lot of thoughts and emotions running through my head right now, but since we've still got more games to play this season, I'll save those for later.

In the meantime, I wanted to thank the great family I got to meet on Friday night before the game. The Withrows from Marietta, Georgia were the winners of the weplay contest to meet me earlier this summer. Marietta... I could swear there was a minor league team down there but I can't be sure. Anyway, it was fun getting to spend some time getting to know Ken and his family.

Gotta love that an entire family from Georgia was decked in their Yankees gear.Anyway, thanks again to the many people who entered here on weplay and to all of you who have been writing in on my profile.

I'll get to some more questions soon and more even when things settle down again in a few weeks.

  7. The Q&A's of August

So August has arrived, which can only mean that it's time to answer some more member questions and comments.

First up, since we've just started a long west coast road trip, a very timely questionfrom my man, Ryan.

"It looks like you got to stay home for much of July. How are road trips to the west? Do you like to get away or do they wear you out? - Ryan Gunderman"

It's true, road trips to the West Coast are very tiring, but I'm still having fun because baseball is what I love to do.

"My softball team is currently 0-10. Every time we have a game my team thinks we are going to lose so no one tries. Is there anything that you do to help your team with confidence? - Sami"

Sometimes, you learn more from your failures than your successes. Try and take something positive from every game and get your team focused on that before the next one.

"Why don't you wear sunglasses during day games? - Lille Marie A.A."

Good question. I do wear them on occasion, but not all that often. It's just personal preference, I guess.

"One thing that I love about how you play is that you never make excuses. Where did you learn this? - Raymond Sherman"

My parents taught me that you have to be accountable for your actions, and I've always lived by that rule on the field and off.

"What do you miss most from a "normal" life without the paparazzi and media and everyone coming up to you away from the Stadium? - Ariel Epstein"

Mostly, I miss my privacy, but I wouldn't trade this job for anything so I can't complain.

"Do you mind when people politely ask for your autograph or a pic - is there a right time or place when it's not too bothersome? - Mary Jane Bauer"

The only time it bothers me is when I'm eating in a restaurant with friend because I feel like it's an inconvenience for the people I'm with.

Sorry I can't get to answer more right now, but I'll be back on soon, so keep those questions coming. Take it easy,
    Derek

  8. How You Can Meet Me

So big day today! I'm not just talking about the start of our four-game stint with the Red Sox (which is huge), but it's also a big day here on Weplay too. I just heard that the official contest where the winner gets to meet me is now up and running. http://www.weplay.com/meet-derek-jeter-contest Are you kidding? The winner of the contest gets to come to New York and hang out with me? At a Yankees game? With his or her family? It's more like being STUCK with me! I guess they couldn't find someone better. No in all honesty, knowing that fans and Weplay members are going to be entering for a chance to meet me, that's flattering. I really do appreciate it, that people would enjoy the opportunity to meet you. So thanks, everyone. Hope you've entered already. I know that when I was younger, if there was a contest to meet any athlete, I would have definitely jumped at a chance to meet Dave Winfield. He was my favorite player growing up. So yeah, it easily would have been him. But there was obviously no Weplay when I was growing up, though I wish there was. It's a great idea and I think people are going to really, really enjoy it. Aren't you having fun already? Alright, back to baseball for now, but good luck to everyone out there and I'm looking forward to meeting the winner.

Well it's June and summer is here. After a great comeback win today, we know we've still got our work cut out for us. The injuries have taken a toll, but I've been saying that you can't sit around and wait for guys to come back. You really just have to find ways to get it done.

It seems like our division is stronger this year, especially the way Tampa has been playing. It gets to a point now where you can't just say it seems like Tampa has a good start. They have a good team and that's the bottom line. Toronto has been in town all week and they are always tough, too. If their pitching staff stays healthy, they are as good as any team in baseball.

So we need to start winning because we don't want to dig ourselves into a hole.

We need to play well. I really think we've been playing well the last couple weeks. We'd like to have won some more games but I think if you continue to play well, the wins will come. We just need to win.

For me, the game of baseball has never been about personal accolades. I never really sit down and reflect on anything like that. It's something you do maybe when the season is over, but when you're playing every single day, I really try not to get caught up in that too much.

Personal accolades are great. Don't think that I don't appreciate them and don't think that I don't enjoy it. But the bottom line is that I'm trying to win.

Of all the stats I'm most proud of, it's that we've won 4 times. And I'm trying to win again. I've said that time and time again. When you play a sport, trying to win is the only thing that should matter.

    Wins, man, that's it.

Thanks again to you guys out there for the support, my #1, #2, #3 and all the fans on Weplay.

  10. Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day, everyone. This is such an important day in our nation to pay tribute to our soldiers and veterans. These brave men and women are true heroes and deserve our respect, gratitude and admiration today and every day.

We are in Baltimore to start out this road trip with a day game today. The team is really starting to play well now having won a few games in a row and a weekend sweep at home. Before we head over to start loosening up, I had some questions from my weplay friends that I was meaning to answer but didn't get around to yet.

Coach Bill Mooney asked about my mental approach when stepping into the batters box.

For me, I just try and stay focused on the pitcher and try to block out everything else the crowd noise, the opposing team and just focus in on the upcoming pitch.

Next one from Matt Delay in Florida.

Hey, My name is Matt Delay, I live in South Florida and I have been playing baseball for about 13 years. I'm really hoping to play baseball on a college level, and then eventually the professional level, any advice?

Hey Matt, So in addition to practicing your game, my best advice for you would actually be to make sure you keep up with your schoolwork. Skills is important, but you have to maintain your GPA to get and keep an athletic scholarship.

Finally, a question from Taylor. He writes:
Hey,I love baseball alot, but i'm hardly good at bat and i was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to hit a little better. Please write.

Since you asked so politely, the most important thing I can tell you is to maintain your balance, keep your eye on the ball, keep a level swing through the strike zone and let the ball come to you.

Enjoy this great weather and I'll catch up with you soon once we're back in New York.
