Always Up for a Challenge

It's true, I really am always up for a challenge as you well know... the marathon was a great test, but this week, I'm taking part in another event that will test me in ways that is already starting to make me nervous.

You may think of me as a soccer player, but golf is really becoming a real passion of mine, which is why the invitation to play in the Pebble Beach Pro Am here in my area is one I couldn't pass up.

This is the first time I've played with men, which is a big deal. I have played in one Pro Am where I was matched up with Karrie Webb when she was number one in the world and I was the first one to tee off, so I do know what it's like to play with people watching... but teeing off at Pebble Beach is the scariest thing you can imagine. I'm telling you... a penalty kick in front of 90,000 people for the World Cup Championships was nothing compared to that moment. Kinda like going out to throw a first pitch in Yankee stadium. You're out of your element and what I found that works best is 1.) take your brain out of it because it always gets in the way and 2.) just enjoy it.

So for me, my mentality when playing a sport that's not my own is to be athletic. Do what you've done before. Of course, that goes out the window in golf because it is so tricky and has so many technical parts. If you don't have it all going in the right direction at the right time then you're gonna be all over the place.

For me being apart of the tournament is the exciting part. You know I grew up not far from Pebble Beach and my grandfather would take me there when I was 8 or 10-years-old. Every year we would sit on the 18th fairway and eat strawberry shortcake. My grandfather loved golf. I think he really wanted me to be a golfer but my mom wanted me to be a tennis player. So I kinda grew up with golf in that way. Not really playing it but watching it going to the range every now and again.

But here I am. A lot of fun celebs and even my fellow Weplayer Peyton Manning is here. I've been trying to get into this tourney for the longest time and it just kinda happened randomly. I'm excited. It's just that first tee off which is lined with people. I think that's the most nerve-racking part because you sure don't want to kill one off the tee.

And of course, being the only female, whether the pressure is there or not, you just have to think, "Ok you have to be better for more than just yourself." As for my next challenge... I would say scuba diving. But I'm not for sure I'm gonna go for it. I've done snorkeling and I like it, but I'm not sure yet. Of course, training camp for the WPS starts soon enough and that's where my focus really is.... Until then, FOOOOOORRRRRREEEEE!
