Team Mom Finds Sports Community Wherever She Goes

By Kim White

“I really enjoy getting to know the parents and kids,” wrote our newest Team Mom of the Week, Alli Elggren from Broomfield, Colorado, when asked what she appreciates most about being volunteering with a youth sports team.

Elggren first took on the role as team mom by “default” because her husband Dan can’t resist an opportunity to coach. He heads up many of their kids’ teams. The position came naturally to Elggren who is a stay-at-home mom to their active kids Ashlyn, 10, Corey, 8, and Claire, 3. She now helps out with all of her husbands youth teams. “Communication comes easy when you’re married to the coach,” pointed out Elggren.

This is a valuable skill she’s formed over the years, after living in five states in 10 years due to Dan’s job. She’s found youth sports to be a great way for her kids as well as Dan and her to make new friends in the community. This skill has helped the whole Elggren family form valuable friendships over the years

But no matter the community, this sports family is always hard at work. Just last week she completed her season with the Broomfield Rec Green Hornets girls basketball team. Now Elggren along with her husband and daughter Ashlyn are on to the Erie Dynamite Volleyball season.

Staying active is very important to Elggren who has lived with Juvenile Diabetes for the past 23 years, and she’s thankful that being team mom is helping her do so. You’ll often find her running around snapping photos of the team in action, which the players enjoy viewing on Weplay right after the game. But she’s more than just a team photographer, she’s every player’s biggest fan.

Congratulations to our Team Mom of the Week, Alli Elggren. The Broomefield community is lucky to have such an active and friendly family!

Alli Elggren’s Recommendations for Fellow Team Moms:

  • Try to create unity among the players and the parents. I always try to get all the parents to sit together at the games to cheer our kids on.

  • Make practice fun! Try a parent -vs.- kids scrimmage or have the kids create a unique team cheer. Getting the kids to relax and have fun together builds trust.

  • Possible coach and player gifts: Print a team picture and have all the kids sign it. It's inexpensive and a great keepsake.

Does your team mom go unnoticed for all their hard work? Nominate them for TMOW and give them the honor they deserve.

As long as he does something that’s from the heart that will make him happy, I’ll be good.
