Rookie Team Mom Stays Positive

By Kim White

Have you ever volunteered for a role without fully knowing what you’re getting into? Mother of four, Leslie Matthews can certainly raise her hand. When her youngest son’s football coach invited her to take on the role of team parent, she immediately agreed. What she didn’t consider, was the laundry list of logistics she would need to handle over the course of the season.

She instantly found that sharing information with the Fairburn Flames parents, whether by text, email or on Weplay, is imperative. Not to mention the importance of a well organized snack schedule. Add parent meetings, picture day responsibilities and of course, the all important end of season banquet to the check list and Matthews has been one busy lady!

“It has been challenging, but a whole lot of fun,” wrote Matthews on her overall experience as team mom so far.

After logistics are handled, Matthews focuses on keeping the six and under players active and positive. At this age, the record is much less important than the experience. Which is why the coaching staff and volunteers spend at least eight hours per week helping the kids learn the fundamentals and having fun.

When she’s not working with Caden, 5, her youngest son and the rest of the Flames, Matthews is probably attending another sporting event with her husband. Their older son’s Derrick Jr, 14, Richard, 11 and Christian, 9, play either basketball or football.

So, will our team parent of the week reclaim her team parent role next season?

“This has been a very exciting 1st year for me being a team mom and would I do it again......I sure would.... no questions!” wrote Matthews

Good luck with the rest of your season Leslie, and we looking forward to seeing you back on Weplay next season!

Leslie’s Recommendations for Fellow Team Parents:

  • Communicate with your players.
  • Show support by coming to practice and games.
  • Have fun and play the sports along with them.
  • Stay positive by showing praise for their accomplishments.

As long as he does something that’s from the heart that will make him happy, I’ll be good.
