In many ways, a family unit resembles a team. Members rely, push and depend on one another to succeed. And those who maintain a positive and constructive attitude garner the most rewards. Team Parent of the Week, Lisa Combs-Creech believes whole heartedly in this philosophy.
She and her husband Bruce have done an amazing job raising five, active, sports-loving kids, four of which have disabilities.
Combs-Creech’s, is of course, committed to helping her kids live happy, healthy lives. Her added challenge is assisting them as they navigate a world of sports and extracurricular involvement without feeling overly restricted by their aliment.
Eldest child, Rachael, 15, is healthy and thoroughly enjoys playing tennis. Andrew, 14, is an outstanding computer whiz, outshining his challenges with Autism and ADHD. Ally, 12, a softball player, suffers from significant hearing loss, which was discovered after being hit in the head during a game. Younger sister Meaghan, 7, has Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. And, 1-year-old Isabella, has Down syndrome and hearing loss.
The Combs-Creech journey has been a tough one, but our Team Parent of the Week feels her experiences have given her the opportunity to teach others.
Aside from volunteering as team mom for Ally's travel softball teams, The Indy Rockets and The Edgewood Heat (a Finch’s Favorite team pick), she has also written for various softball magazines about encouraging kids with T1 diabetes to play sports.
As a family, they have also learned American Sign Language and Combs-Creech is currently teaching ASL at a local daycare. On top of that, she volunteers for a local Down Syndrome family connection group.
Of all of her volunteer efforts, Combs-Creech finds youth sports to be a great way to keep her family active, and bonding as a group. Not to mention she's a big fan of Weplay and its many logistical tools that help teams stay on top of fundraising, stats and so much more.
“Whether people realize it or not Weplay brings them closer together,” wrote Combs-Creech.
