How the Best Athletes Perceive Failure

by Kirk Mango, posted January 16 2011

Most of the time when we watch the best athletes compete, we see the end results of the time, energy, and efforts they’ve put in to prepare for success in competition. However, something we are not privy to and which happens more often than you might think, are the little failures here and there that normally occur on this path toward excellence.

The little chinks in the armor that some believe don’t exist in the elite since they consistently seem to perform above expectation.

Even more important than this is the perspective that these “exceptional” athletes have when they appear to have found the limits to their own ability, something they are always challenging themselves to do.

In this piece titled “Drew Brees KNOWS what it takes, just ask host Steve Croft of 60 Minutes!,” I explore this concept of an elite athlete’s view of failure through the challenge Steve Croft gives to one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL – Drew Brees.

Clarifying how athletes of this caliber view failure is what this piece is all about, so I invite you to go to the titled link above to see this unique perspective.

Kirk is the author of "Becoming a True Champion: Achieving Athletic Excellence From the Inside Out" (forthcoming publication from Rowman & Littlefield, 2012), and the blog "The Athlete's Sports Experience: Making a Difference." Both his book and blog are written for the purpose of making a difference in the loss of perspective common in youth, high school and collegiate levels of sports.

Whether it's her support in sports or in schoolwork, she knows putting in time with her kids is her number one priority and she wouldn't have it any other way.

As long as he does something that’s from the heart that will make him happy, I’ll be good.
