My 3 year old girl just started gymnastics, will she be limited because she's chunky or will this help her trim down?

See I am asking because most of the girls I see are so thin and my daughter is not fat but she is on the chunky side. She has thick legs I wonder if some girls start out like that then get trimmer as they go on. My daughter loves gymnastics and she is having a great time.

Kind of a double-edged sword there. Any type of intense activity or sport will help with increasing weight loss. The issue is that weight control, in an adult or child, is more a dietary issue than an activity issue. While it is true that kids today have a lack of physical exercise, there is no sport that will overcome poor eating habits. I have a similar issue with my own daughter. An old saying in strength training is that abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. My suggestion would be work with your child's paediatrician and see if there are some changes that need to be made in the diet and that there are no issues with her participating in gymnastics. At her age it should be fairly easy to make any adjustments. Other than that, just encourage the activity and effort.

It is called baby fat for a reason. This can be carried up to on set of puberty.I agree before you become overly concern talk to your pediatrician.

Diet is likely a contributing factor but may not be the only one. Do not put your 3 year old on a diet without talking to a doctor.

Gymnastic at the age of three will not help your child lose weight. It will help with gross motor skill development. Remember for the most part gymnastic is anaerobic and not done enough to have an overall effect on the physical well being of a three year old.

Gymnastics at this age should be fun and for body awareness but not used as a means to modify a toddlers body. Talk to your doctor and see if he/she feels that your daughter is normal for your age and body type. Develop a plan with their help.

I agree with the above answer don't put her on a diet per say but there are some choices in foods that are better then others.
    STANDARD GOOD BETTER BEST
butter margarine light spread diet margarine
cottage cheese 2%milk fat 1%milk fat dry curd
icecream frozen yogurt ice milk fruit sorbet
mayo light mayo diet mayo mustard
    whole milk 2%milk 1%milk skim/nonfat
yogurt lowfat yogurt ----------- nonfat yogurt

    REPLACE WITH
    bologna turkey ham
    cheese reduced-calorie dressing
    mayo mustard
    red meat chicken/fish
sour cream regular plain yogurt with some lemon juice

    Other Suggestions
use pam or similar spray-type, vegetable-based coating products.
reduce the number of egg yolks in omelets and scrambled eggs.
avoid cookies, chocolates, pastries and candy.
Avoid rich or supreme prducts such as Haagen Dazs ice cream, Yoplait yogurt, ect (use nonfat products are fine Yoplait light for example).
Use jelly or jam on bread rather than butter or margarine.
Avoid potato chips and corn chips.

    SAMPLE LOW FAT LUNCH
1 slice turkey 2 slices wheat bread
    lettuce 1 apple
    green pepper slices 2 bananas
    mustard 2-3 Fig Newtons

Well, you have to understand she is 3 years old. In gymnastics you possibly could trim down except you have to work hard! i have been on AGRA Springers Gymnastics for about 5 years and have lost 7-8 pounds. But if she is a little one, she might not loose as much weight as older girls could. Maybe if u get her to train a little harder she could! But don't be to worried she is 3 most kids that age are a little chunky! <3
