Who should cover the steal at 2nd base, shortstop or outfielder? My daughter's coach has the outfielder taking all throws to 2nd.

I have never seen this before in softball and just wondering if any other teams do this too. Too many balls are getting by and going to the outfield and there is no backup because the outfielder is taking the throw.

I have seen this before, but do not subscribe to this method. I do not know the age group of your daughter, but unless it is a 8U team, I would be teaching my SS or 2B to cover the base with the CF backing up.

    1. This is 10U and a lot of the girls are moving up to 12U next year with the same coach. I think they are going to get burned on this method in the older age division.

I have my ss cover unless my ss needs to cover 3rd and 2nd is empty. I usually have my centerfielder cover 2nd on a bunt when SS has to go to cover third.

To many times we adjust the play to the players we have on the field. This only hurts the players when they move to a higher age group. When the girls are young, it is too easy to have a defensive play like that. I have a 10U team and I have 5 girls that could consistently hit into the outfield. the rest are small girls and almost always make contact with the ball, but only in the infield. With this it is easy to drift the outfielders in, but this can be confusing. Teach them to make the play properly, they may surprise you.

    1. The player that plays shortstop a majority of the time is good enough to make the play but for some reason he won't let her. Instead, he plays her over towards third, to the right of the pitcher.

    2. I am not sure what he thinks the advantage of this is. It seems a longer run for the outfielder to 2nd than the shortstop.

    3. Is this a rec/developmental league or a travel team?

I've never seen this promulgated in practice, but have seen it during a game. The coach might be trying to hone the girls' ability to play out-of-position.

I have never seen a CF take the throw down. On our team, I train the girls to have SS taking the throw down with 2 nearby and as a backup, and CF carefully watching and backing up behind them in-case there is a miss.

I knew by the question this was a young team.

Some coaches have the CF take the throwdown because it's hard to learn to take it from SS, especially at a young level.

This is a disservice to the players. You are right to be concerned about what will happen when the players move up.

Coaches should teach it correctly from the start. Stop teaching it incorrectly out of convenience.

you should have your shortstop cover the bag, your CF is for overthrows, and sometimes you can have your 2nd baseman back up the SS right in front of the center fielder. my team usualy has the second baseman covering overthrows to the pitcher

in the younger age group, the coach can get away with this only because most younger girls won't hit to the outfield so he can play the outfielders in closer. definitely the WRONG thing to do, because this isn't teaching good fundamental ball.
