I don't use a middle linebacker I have two linebackers and depending on what i am running at the time I will have them key off the backs or give them an area to protect. I tell them to take an inside out attack as the D-ends are taking an outside in attack. the D-end will try to turn the play inside so that the linebackers can fill from the inside and make the play. If they are on a blitz i tell them they better make the play in the backfield or they will be chasing the ball carrier. I linebackers should be the leading tacklers on my team .

Several Def. might use MLB 6x1, 4x3 or 5x3 In any case the MLB for me is the strongest tackler on the team, not necessarily the best athlete. MLB protects the 1 & 2 gaps (gaps either side of the center first) or A gaps depending on the system used. Secondly the MLB flows to the play whether it's a run to outside or passes across the middle. The MLB is also utilized in blitzing schemes, putting direct pressure to the QB! Hope this helps...

i am a middle linebacker also but i am on the J.V team... i really depends on what what defense you r running because in a 44 reg. you want to watch the running back but i feel that the most important thing to do is watch the Gard in front of u cause he will lead you to the play... that is important at u level cause most running plays they will pull a Gard...
