How to be a leader in Basketball?
So I am started my 2nd year of playing for my middle school team.Last year I was a bench player and play for 30 seconds in the championship game. Now I am started my 2nd year and I am the starting Shooting Guard and The second star on my team(which doesn't matter to me).Anyways the coaches keep saying someone needs to step-up and be a leader. How could I be a leader and what do I need to get others to follow? Thanks!

I think every coach has a different definition of what "leadership" means, but there are definitely some commonalities... Things like always arriving early and prepared for practices and games. Working hard at every practice. Being an example to other players of what to do and what not to do. Actively and obviously listening to the coaches. Getting your teammates to pay attention and take things seriously. These are all leadership qualities!

There are two parts to leadership in basketball. The first part is off the court, and in practice. You have to lead by example, and really want to improve your game. Go as hard as you can in every drill and listen to everything the coach says. By being more serious and working harder your teammates will naturally feed off your energy and work harder as well. The second part is on the court during the game. To be a leader on the court you need to keep your cool at all times, and again you need to be working harder than anyone else on the floor. You never want to get down on yourself or your teammates. Being a leader all starts from within. It doesn't have to do with trying to get your teammates to do things, but has everything to do with setting a good example for those around you. Even the worst player on the team can be a leader by always doing there best and listening to the coach.
