Question
What is a good brand for catcher's gear? What is considered good catcher's gear?
I am a catcher looking for gear. I have found many different styles and brands and was wondering which was a good brand and which offered good protection while catching. I am also not looking to spend a fortune on catchers gear, as some of the brands I have found are extremely expensive and the full gear costs well over $400.

Check on the internet. Ebay and craigs list has good deals but compare the prices with Sporting goods sites to make sure you are getting a good price.

Wilsons has great catchers gear that is what my team uses

I just bought a set of youth size catching gear. It is Wilson, it's solid gear for a young catcher. $100. I added the knee savers though for another $25 or so.
I am happy with it but my catcher has a bit more professional gear. I don't know how much it costs and I don't think I want to! But this does the trick; my youngest daughter is 5' 6" and it fits her well. The helmut is full protection and the mask is not padded but velcros (or un-velcros) so it's easy to throw off.
If you're looking to purchase set...it's not going to be chump change! But if you are able to piece the set together don't skimp just do what you are able and make sure you don't get it too small!!
Also - if you're still growing definitely watch your wallet - you'd be upset if the gear only lasted a season right!

any kind is good but make sure it fits!!! it should be tight but not too tight

My daughter is a catcher also, and she loves Wilson. She said it is good to work with and isn't going to break the bank.
