Question
Ball Choice for 15 Year Old Girl
Our daughter may be joining her HS bowling team and will be needing a ball. She's currently using a 10 lb house ball in PE. We talked about getting a 13 lb finger tip ball, but she believes she will not be able to hang onto it because less finger is inside the ball. We tried to explain that a well fitted ball is actually easier to swing, but I suppose that will be discussion she'll need to take up with the person who will be fitting her. Our question is what kind of ball and about what weight?
Thanks ahead

I met with the coach last night and they are buying a few balls for the girls to try, then the team of coaches will be assessing each kid then giving a ball recommendation. Coaches are also providing free individual lessons for the girls on the side, and the house is giving the girls free games through the Christmas break. Very impressed with the program. I've never seen this kind of individual attention given to a team like this in any other sport. She's really excited!

Coach recommended a 13 lb Columbia 300 Freeze with semi-fingertip drilling.

I don't know the qualifications of the team's coach. Unfortunately many HS bowling coaches know nothing about bowling and monitor the activity to provide extra income for themselves. However, what you've described above gives me the appearance the program is well organized.Hopefully the coach is working very closely with an IPBSIA Certified pro shop operator and trained staff.
Personally I would avoid using a 13 pound bowling ball. The weight block configuration combined with the overall ball weight make it very difficult to attain maximum reaction potential. Suggest the situation is re-evaluated and select either 12 or 14 pound ball. if 12 pound is selected, the weight block should be symmetrical which will make the ball more controllable but not hook as much. Conversely the 14 pound ball can be drilled to allow ball to react differently.
Not knowing your daughter's game, style, and her skill set with bowling it's extremely difficult to provide any level of comment with a high level of confidence.
Good Luck!

Coach Frye,
Wow--after reading your suggestion, I started taking a closer look at ball technology and can't believe how much goes into a ball design these days! We'll have to stick with ball/configuration this year and take a little more time to research for next year's balls.Since I last posted, my daughter seems to continue improving, although her hook has become somewhat of a novelty to her and she's really exploring the potential of the ball. I've noticed coach reminding her to not follow through across her body.
We went out last night as a family and she bowled 140, 155 and 193 on very dry lanes. She really got to play around with the hook and was hitting the pocket from the 1-5 boards!
Thanks again for your advice

Proud daddy:
My freshman daughter, having just picked up bowling this year, made JV within 2 weeks, then varsity shortly after. Her team won districts, and they are headed to state today! -
Awesome accomplishment! Good luck to her in the state tournament
