Usually the earliest is 5 depending on their maturity level as well as their abilitity to pay pay attention and imitate moves. Look for a club that makes it fun and fair but also teaches kids good technique.

Some kids can start as early as 5, but some shouldn't start until 10. Depends on the emotional maturity of the kid. I don't like to see kids crying after every match (sometimes win or loss). Make sure program can handle young kids - I prefer kids to start 3rd grade, but some programs have the kids fairly advanced by then as crazy as that sounds.

Age five is the earliest to start a child in wrestling. I do agree it should depend on the maturity level of the child. In my experience having wrestled in junior high & high school & officiating the sport, when a child does begin wrestling let him or her have fun and learn about the sport. When the time comes to be serious about winning in wrestling, usually in high school, sometimes earlier, the child will become committed to winning at that time because they will have had the chance to have fun and learn about wrestling at a younger age.

Here's a good book for the younger ones to read while you decide on joining. It is illustrated by a former University of Michigan wrestler and co authored by a former University of Michigan wrestler. "Wrestling The ABCs-Creating Character and Fostering Fitness" for ages 4-10 (or wrestling fans of all ages). Features a book foreword by legendary wrestler and coach, Dan Gable.

i think that sometimes if u start a kid to early by the time that they are old enough to start competing on the school team that they r kinda getting old of it idk tho thats just me

I like to get them into the wrestling room around age 4 or 5 let them have fun and watch some of the older kids. DO NOT force your child to wrestle, their behavior in the room will help you to know if they are ready. I would not recomend taking them to a bunch of tournements the first year, just your local club tournement is plenty.

It depends on the child, but we have some as young as 4 on the team. The Coaches encourage them to have fun, but teach them the correct way to do the moves so that no one gets hurt. It always amazes me how well the young ones do, how much they are able to learn. As long as the emphasis is on fun & fitness instead of winning and the child has the attention & desire to do the sport, the younger the better!

I believe USA Wrestling rules say 4 1/2 to be able to wrestle in tournements. But as with anything that has to do with a child DO THEY WANT TO DO IT.

Our youth wrestling team starts at 5, depending on the maturity of the child. In the four years my boys have wrestled, I have seen some 5 year olds really take to the sport while others did not. Talk with your local youth coach, they may allow you to bring your child to a few practices before you commit.
