Beg your local bowling center to put out sport compliant patterns (see USBC Sport Bowling web site for patterns).
Straighter is typically better, however on a sport pattern accuracy and consistency are critical. On some patterns, missing your mark by 2 boards is the difference between hitting the pocket or hitting the 6 pin (or 4 pin for lefty).
Sport bowling is also a game of spare shooting. On a sport pattern, straight is always best. Avoid at all cost attempting to shoot spares with a hook ball on sport patterns.
Suggest you find a USBC certified coach and get some session completed before going to Vegas. Also, take full advantage of each practice session.
Good Luck!
