Question
I've had many problems with this. My dad and I will work on it for a long time but when I get into that box, it switches to the worse possible swing ever. I can't hit the ball when it happens and it's keeping me from varsity softball and USSSA 18u fallball. I'm so angry with myself because it frusterates me to the point when its about to distract my defensive playing. Does anybody have any tips??????

Hi Amber, I have said this in a few other answers: 90% of hitting is half mental. Have confidence when you hit. A good comfort level is also important, maybe try getting a lot of practice at your game field so you are as comfortable there as you are at home. Establish a routine when you are hitting, like step out before every pitch, check your batting gloves or rub sand in your hands, so that hitting becomes second nature to you, just like walking is second nature. If you have been practicing hard, treat yourself to some new equipment, a new gear bag, helmet, glove, new BP balls can really lift your spirits. Don't be intimidated by the pitcher, I bet she is half the size as your dad is, your not intimidated when he pitches to you, are you? Most of all keep it fun, a bad day on the ball field beats a good day at school or work.

Stop thinking sooo much, you know you can do it so trust yourself. Make sure you step out of the box between each pitch and play your swing in your mind. See yourself making a great swing and good contact. Be positive and do not over think your swing. Know you can hit it!!!

Tell yourself, "I am going to hit this ball. I am going to hit this ball." Go in the box with confidence and know you will hit it. Don't worry about striking out! Get in there and swing at good pitches! Get the worry of striking out out of your mind or you will always have a hard time batting. You can do it and you will get a couple of hits and build that confidence. I have faith in you and your ability! Don't watch the good pitches go by......swing at them! Just picture yourself hitting the ball in the box, just the way you have practiced!

I have the same problem..its all mental. When you are in the on-deck circle you are focusing on technique, but when you are in the box all you think about is wanting to hit the ball so your focus on the technique is gone..you also dont have that reaction time to think about the technique, just go in the box and DONT think about it swing how you know how to and you will be fine..relax, it's all about confidence.

As a coach, this is one of the most important things we can teach the players. Having confidence when you dig in is just as important as knowing which end of the bat to hold. Confidence comes from mechanics and repetition, but as they said earlier, 90% is half mental. This one sounds weird, but try it - daydream. We can all do it, and sometimes you're more zoned than others... but if you work at it, you really TRULY can enter that mental area and "activate the mechanism." With practice and visualization, you can literally slow everything down. I know, I know - sounds weird - but entirely possible.
