We have two girls on our team, both are 5 or 6 and they are very afraid of the ball. How do we get them unafraid of the ball?

We have four coaches, each of us have worked with them individually, we had two parents and one high school softball player each work with these two girls. They will not charge the ball, they will get it after it has come to a stop, and when batting they will either stand there and not make an attempt to hit it or the move out of the batters box. We have tried having them stand there and not hit the ball, just to get them used to the ball coming at them. We are at a loss as to what to do for these two girls.

for the fielding hit them balls and make them do some kind of a punishment like running the bases once each time they dont at least make an attempt to go after it. and for batting my bro had tht prob after he got hit so we put bats all around the edge of the box so he wouldnt step out of the box you could also try putting like catcher gear on them and making them bat? thts wat our coach had to do with one girl cuz she didnt wanna get hit. and once she got used to it she didnt care anymore and didnt need the gear.

I coach 4-6 exclusively so pleaseeee listen when I say any type of punishment at this age will turn them off forever. You HAVE to take the fear and intimidation away from the ball. I always tell my kids that no matter what they're doing on the field THEY are in charge of the ball. First...try using the softer 'safety' balls. Stand a few feet in front of them and just roll it toward them. Make it a game of how many times they stop the ball before it rolls past. Second...put a trash can or bucket in front of them. Hit the ball toward the bucket and have them run around it to get the ball. Make it a game! As for hitting. Use a tee every day to warm up and then do soft-toss over and over and over. I suggest keeping the girls away from each other at practice..they might be feeding each other's fears. If one loses the fear of the ball...the other probably will also. Use very very small steps with them. Even rolling the ball a few feet away with no glove on will help them get more comfortable.
