Why do some coaches believe its bad for a freshman to start? I start as a freshman and the teams we play, look down on me.

I play on a High School Softball team (Fastpitch & Slowpitch). I start and I'm just a Freshman. Teams that we play look down on me. Until, of course, I turn a good play. They believe I shouldn't be playing 3rd. I don't see how it makes a difference, as long as I'm doing my job.

Congrats on playing varsity as a freshman. If your coach put you on varsity you must be an outstanding player. However, some coaches believe that they should play underclassmen because they have payed their dues. Don't worry what other teams say. Let your bat, glove and arm do the talking.

If your coach has confidence in playing you thats all that matters. The rest will always work out. My kids played their respective sports as freshman in highschool and now in college. It will not hurt you as long as you maintain respect for yourself and the game. Enjoy it!

I started on varsity as a freshman. I was the pitcher. If the other teams look down on you...they are just jealous cuz you got skills. So just show off lol!

I like all comments posted. Focus on things you want to accomplish and ways you can help your team and teammates. Forget about things outside of yourself and that you have no control over. They will only becom distractions, but only if you let them. Best of luck!!!

Most people believe that upperclassmen should only be on varsity. thats how our school works. im a freshman playing on jv and freshman/sophomore and our school has one freshman playing varsity and shes a great player. other teams end up loosing to her because shes a pitcher and they believe she doesnt deserve to be there..lol. thats what i think but dont think about it too much, itll distract your playing!

I agree with everyone .They are a 100% right . Hold your head up high and be proud . because you earned that spot. and I been around a lots of coaches and they must think you are doing a good job if you wasing you would be on the bench. My Daughter is a tenth grade and she went straight to varisty on Basketball and Softball and she a started. on both and at first I felt bad because my daughter was a freshmen and there was sinior seating on the bench . But now I dont feel bad because my Daughter worked really hard to get where she is ..today. .So Hon Dont let them get you down keep on doing what you are doing and dont change .. I can promise if you were no good you would be riding the bench. .I have seen my daughter coaches move a freshmen. up from J.V and they are riding the bench .I disagree with that because they could get playing time on J.V. ..I told the coach if he wonted a person on the bench then he needs to fold some uniform and fold them up and put them on the bench. .So HON DONT FEEL BAD .YOU EARNED YOU SPOT...

I'm with you. I don't see what difference it makes either. When I coach, I don't look at age or grade. Everyone is a player on the team and each one is expected to perform their best and give their best effort. I don't expect more from seniors or less from freshman. I believe they all can get the job done that we're asking them to (field a ball, make a throw, or put their bat on the ball). After all, they all do it time and time again in practice - grade level doesn't matter.

I also started as a freshman on my high school varsity team - good job being there! Wishing you the best.

Just keep doing what you are doing. There are some coaches that has thier favorites but if you keep practicing and work hard at your goal. I promise it will all work out if thats what you really wont in life. You will get a chance in life to show your skills . The Coach that is playing flavorites thier will be a day you can look at that coach and say look at me now ..So dont worry about that and dont give up on your dreams..That Coach is not going to get you into college. You are the one thats got to work hard to get where you wont to be . 10 Years now you will still be learning stuff.

some girls might be jealous, and angry that your coach decided to put a freshman on the varsity team, i was in the same position..but don't worry about it, obviously you are good or you wouldnt be in this situation, just go out and prove those girls wrong and ALWAYS do your best!
