2 different instructors at 2 different clinics; Should the catcher step forward or go behind the catcher

2 different instructors at 2 different clinics; Should the catcher step forward or go behind the catcher when throwing to third? One instructor says it is best to step forward and use the left arm to sweep the batter out of the way if needed. The other says throw behind the batter? Anyone have a compelling argument either way?

Behind is generally easier with just a side step and throw. Throwing in front requires extra movement and a change of direction.

    1. I'd also teach the kids to react situationally and not make them try to do it a certain way every time. If a batter has just ducked backwards and a short forward step provides a better path, then be able to react and move accordingly.

    2. The outside of the basepath belongs to the runner, so you would step forward as the defender.

I typically agree with Ken. However, if your catcher's learn both methods, they are able to execute whichever one is most effective for that play.

There may come a time when stepping forward is the better method in a particular circumstance and if the catcher knows either one, she can simply make the move the situation presents.

I agree with Stacie, you need to know how to do both because every situaton is not the same. Practice both better to be safe than sorry.
