What is the best way to have a batting practice and still keep the other players occupied and productive?

We found that the girls in the field are standing around waiting several pitches for a hit and the others are waiting their turn to bat without much to do. We have tried doing soft toss and batting off of a Hurricane batting machine to give the next hitters something productive to do. We also have base runners to simulate game situations. The more coaches/parents we have at practice, the more side activities that we can do.

One thing i do is a mini-game. If you have 12 players, divide them into groups of 4. 8 players in the field, coach pitches 6 pitches,no walks or stealing. Each team gets 3 outs.If you have parental help, you can get it moving very quickly. This way they can get 4 to 6 quality at bats. Bats waiting can do soft toss while waiting to bat.

You need a bucket of balls. Make it a quick rotation of 5-10 balls. The girls rotate in 3 times. Pitch about 10 feet in front of them - it will help their reaction time, and it speeds up the drill. Give the batter time to reset, then fire in the next pitch. After she's done, she gets the balls she has missed and 'bocce"s them back to the bucket. You can have 1/2 the girls with helmets and bats, then alf the girls fielding.

Well i dont know how many girls you have on your team but my team has 18. We scrimmage, and we work on our plays. That way no one is standing, because girls are either running bases, fielding or hitting. There may be just one girl standing because she would be on deck. This helps a lot.

A good offensive practice plan that would have to be adjusted to softball and availability of machines.

I found a really awesome drill that the girls love too. You put one player with a glove at first base- no one else is on the field. The batter gets a soft toss pitch from the coach. They hit the ball as hard as they can then run the bases. The player at first chases the ball and when she picks it up yells "got it!" The runner stops. It is fun to cheer on the runner and see which batter can get the farthest.

I have stood in the fungo circle (or where the fungo circle would be) with a bat and ball. If the player taking Batting practice doesn't hit the ball, I either hit a ground ball or a fungo out of my hand, to a random fielder. This way the fielding players see more action and the BP Pitcher and batter have time to set up for the next pitch.

I agree with the fungo commment, this keeps things moving and keeps everyone active. Then then the batter runs on the 10 swing(if they make contact) if they dont make contact they stay at bat until they do and run the hit out. Then the fields work on situations based on the runners on base.

I would agree with Al here-the mini game is a great idea. Not only will the batter get practice, but the girls will learn the necessary fundamentals out in the field. Wish I would have seen more of this stradegy at my daughter's practice!

You can use many drills. You can have few kids hitting, while the others are hitting wiffle balls.

You can do many drills at a time, and have everybody occupied. You can have a station where you do a mini game where everybody is either fielding, hitting, or pitching (warming up or something). You can also Do infield- Outfield. This is where you split up the players who play infield and outfield. You hit balls to them and see if they know what to do. Tell the girls to listen and pay attention, because you can do anything, bunting, or you can even play a mini scrimmage game with half the team or another team
