Matthew,
The term "set" originally comes from the longer term "set up", which refers to the ball that is directed to the hitter. The "setter" then is usually a very specialized player with more advanced ability to direct the ball with precision to the hitter. The set is usually the second contact immediately following the pass, and followed by the attack, spike, or hit. -
oh my goodness! a set is where the ball goes straight up in the air so that someone else can spike, or volley it over. Duh!

A set is a one way to set up your hitter to slam it on to the other side of the coart!!!
and a good way to know or get used to setting is to put your hands on your hips i know it sounds weird but take them derectly off of your hips and in the same shape that they are have someone put the volleyball in your hands and just extend your hands outward to the people beside you it is much easier to start setting up against a wall before you start setting up to your hitters!!!
I hope this helps you!!! -

This actually depends on what you are asking. If you are asking about a type of hit, then the set is when you make contact with the ball and send it to where your hitter can get a good swing on it and hit the ball hard as in a spike or place it carefully as in a d!nk.
However recently the volleyball rules have been changed and now each game in a match is called a set. So when you play one game in a best out of scenario (as in best out of 3 or best out of 5), that is called a set.
