Question
Every time I go running, like even if it's only a mile or two, my upper right ribs get a sharp pain in them. It feels like my ribs are tearing. I always have to stop running and the pain takes about 3 min. to go away. I have a pretty good pain tolerance, but the pain is so severe I just can't move. I can't move my arms or even breath too deeply during the min. Is there anything I can do to make it stop?

Heather, you are describing the classic runner's stitch. It has never been determined what actually causes it. It can happen during other athletic activities, but is most common during running, especially in young people. It has been conjectured that it occurs from the strain on the internal organs or the referred from spinal stress, both of which occur during running. But as long as it is not spreading and it goes away within a few minutes of resting you are probably ok. You can try to find and learn some breathing exercises that may help but that's also conjecture.

You have what we call stiches! if you drink a lot of water or liquid before you run, you will get a very painful stabbing-like pain in your side. So what I found works for me is to not drink anything before you run. If you do drink, though, make it a very small sip, and you won't get that pain anymore.
