I think it depends. If we are talking about those who work hard at conditioning, building, tumbling and practicing almost every day or so then yes cheerleading is a sport BUT if we are talking about those who practice once or twice a week and only make signs and do not condition, build, tumble etc then no that is not a sport.

it isnt

No because you just cheer for teams

I'm going to have to agree with you Joe

Meagan,
Actually, a recent lawsuit involving a collegiate cheerleading squad verses the volleyball team determined that cheerleading does not qualify as a collegiate sport. -
The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA) say that "Cheerleading in its current format, does not meet the ... criteria (of the definition of a sport)."
Here is the link to their position paper:
http://www.aacca.org/content.aspx?item=Resources/Test.xmlI think the main reason is that to be a sport, most of your events must be competitive. With school cheerleading, most events are games, and your primary purpose is school spirit. (This also means that all-star cheerleading would fit the description of a "sport" as their primary purpose is competition).
This does not mean that cheerleading is not athletic. I've cheered in high school and college, and have coached for 4 years - I can attest that cheerleading can be more physically demanding than lots of sports.

As I said in the beginning....IF you are a competitive cheerleader who conditions several days a week, running, builing, tumbling etc then yes it should be a sport. AACCA and colleges may not think so but those girls work just as hard. HOWEVER if you are only a spirit cheerleader who cheers for school games then no most likely cheerleading would not be a sport. I cheered competitve for years and then I was a spirit cheerleader for a few years. There is a major difference in the two. I have also coached both.

truth be told, sorry to say, by definition high school cheerleading is not a sport. you cheer FOR a team. while all star is because its just compeition and doesnt cheer for a school or anything. they are the team.
-
yes there's HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADING,MIDDLE SCHOOL CHEERLEADING , COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING,,BASKETBALL CHEERLEADING ,CHEERNASTICS,FOOTBALL CHEERLEADING and SOCCER CHEERLEADING!
-
Yes! Cheerleaders work just as hard as any sports players do. For my school we do a lot of conditioning and sprints. We lift people in the air and catch them wayyy harder then catching a football... and we do it without pads!
