Question
What is the best way to start a cheerleading squad at a new school?Any ideas?
I work in a new charter school and am trying to put together a cheerleading squad for the girls! All of the girls are inexperienced and I have never been a cheerleader myself(I did just about everyother sport, and do know how to get them into shape)! What should our first steps be? Any help is needed and appriciated! We would be cheering for the boys basketball team.

Hi Melanie,
I found your question to be interesting so I looked up some things on the Internet for you on how to start a new cheerleading squad at your school. One of the best sites I found that has great advice is eHow.com. The article is titled How to start a Cheerleading Team by eHow Sports & Fitness editor. Hope that you can find the answers you are looking for. -
I am a cheerleader myself. If your looking for cheerleaders then you need to encourage them to come tryout and how awesome this year is going to be a such.If you have team already then you need to stretch with them find good stretches and such. Also find cheers. You need to find flyers ( which is the girls that goes up in the air. You need to also take the girls to a gym and or they need to take gymnastics. Tell them there will be a fee and give them the basics. Since I am a cheerleader I know everything about it. So if u have any more quetions like what if questions then e-mail me back and ill be glad to help :D

you should first put up posters for tryouts, also ask the principal or the main adviser of the school, days that you could have tryouts. good luck

I recently started a youth cheerleading squad in my community and was amazed at the turn out I got. We started with 16 back in October and now have 20. I sent informational fliers home for the parents and then had permission forms and consent waivers to send home at the first practice. Make sure you get those back right away. If you're looking for funds, my assistant coach sponsored a candle sale with her friend that is a Home and Garden consultant. You can get a $3 kickback! We made over $700 in PROFITS. This will buy your poms and uniforms, as well as pay for trips, snacks, etc. I would suggest that you hold try-outs, but consider not cutting anyone. I did not make any cuts, but made a bigger effort to have our coaches work with some of the girls harder. I find that equal opportunity teams work out well in small communities and give the members a chance to make even more friends with similar interests. Plus, with a bigger squad, if half of them are gone, you've still got a fair amount of girls. If you have any questions, I'd be more than willing to give you some suggestions. I can also send you the forms that I used for my waivers and such which cover all the basics. Good luck in your endeavors and I wish you a fun-filled upcoming year! My absolute best piece of advice is GO FOR IT! The community will thank you. :)

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH TRYIN TO GET A SOCCER TEAM. FIRST
WE GOT PEOPLE TO SIGN A PETITION AND GOT OVER 300 NAMES. WE
THEN TALKED WITH THE OFFICE/PRINCIPAL. THEY FINALLY GOT A TEAM.
IT TOOK ALMOST A YEAR BUT WE GOT IT. JUST GET PEOPLE WHO ARE
INTRESTED TO SIGN AND TALK WITH ADMISISTRATION. GOOD LUCK. AND
NEVER GIVE UP! -

Well, i did the same thing as you. this year i am attending a private school so i made a cheer squad. what you do is have cheer tryouts just like for spirit if no tumblers are there. then you try some dances and farther on, use some stunts.
it differes from school.
i started the sqaud 4 months ago and now we are up to really good stunts. -
Well, first i would think about sending them to a nearby camp, if not to expensive. The camps can be VERY helpful because the instructers are very skilled. And dont try to rush things once you get your team together, as far as stunts and tumbling goes! I hope that helped a little bit, Good Luck!

LET THEM TRYOUT AND ACCEPT THEM ALL TO JOIN
-
well if you dont know how to cheer ask around your area and some cheerleader may want to help i would

well just try not to expect really good girl at tryouts and go running sround the track lots of inderense exersices. also have the bases and backspots work out there arms and legs holdin a girl in the air and then throwin her and catchin her is not easy. have the flyers strech a lil more than everyone if you want them to look good and do some good stunts. start out teaching them spimple cheers and as the weeks go on make them harder. also if yu no any cheerleaders as friends or friends childern that are cheerleaders have them come in and help. you have no idea how much you can learn from someone that has done cheer for a year or more. have faith in the girls that are goin to join

I don't know if you have accomplished this yet but I just did this. Our school is a private school and is lacking in school spirit. We finished with 3 cheerleaders for varsity and 5 pep squad last year and no coach. So I volunteered to revamp the program. Like you, I have no experience at all. I held a cheer info meeting and suggested that there where pe clothes and tennis shoes. I invited a local competition coach to go over basic skills. They even learned a cheer. Closed out with a pizza dinner and parent meeting. I did not have a tryout-if they showed up and had parental consent, they were on the squad. I had about 25 kids from 4-6th grade show up and a couple cheerleaders from the high school helped too. I now actually have 15 on the team 4-6th grade and no high school (weird I know). So my 4-6th grades will be doing pep rallys and cheering at varsity games. I contracted with the same competition cheer coach to provide a weekly tumbling class and he also held a private camp for us. They had very little experience when they started but now they are doing really well. We are learning pyramids and dances and look fabulous! It is a big job to start something from scratch. There were no guidelines or structure before, so I had to start over. School starts in about a week and everyone will be pleasantly surprised at our success. I hope this encourages a new breed of school spirit. Our school badly needs it! Good luck and if you have any questions email me.

I would make a petition and have anyone that would participate or like to have cheerleaders and when you think you have enough people that have signed it. Take it to your principle and explain why you think your school needs a cheerleading squad.I hope this helps let me no what happens.Good luck.

you could make friends 2 help u and ask around first if they acutaly want a team plus you have to have parents 4 car pool and 4 uniformes and stuf so you first need 2 get organized
-
