If your coach send you home citing your Type 1 Diabetes and plays everyone else is it discrimination and who should I call to get help?

My daughter is a 6 year old very well controlled Type 1 diabetic who plays softball. Recently, her coach called me on my cell phone, rather than telling me face to face that due to her diabetes she needed to go home and she wouldn't be playing. It was not due to play time or too many players but her diabetes and she had been well controlled all day and I kept stating that fact. He refused to play her, but played all the 12 other girls. The next day he stated that she could have played but because he had a very public fight with his wife on the fields, he wanted us gone so we wouldn't witness it and used her diabetes as an excuse. I think it is discriminatory, but who would I call. The board of the team refuses to touch it.

So yes I do agree that it is wrong and should not be a reason to not play, there are many MLB players that play at the professional level and control their diabetes.

So the right way to handle it is to bring it to the board, but it sounds like they are not going to help.

If the ballfield is a public ballfield you can go to the city that runs the field and file a complaint with them. If it is private outside of the board you could go to the field owners to make them aware of the situation. Many field owners do not allow field usage for the money but more for the fact that they are allowing youth from their community to play sports.

Is this the only team that your daughter can play on in your area? If not I do not know if I would want her in that situation even if it is resolved.

We are looking for another team because we feel as you do that we do not want her in that situation again. She should be seen as a person first with diabetes second. Thank you for your answer and help!

You could state it to the public. With the public and maybe even the news on their backs I'm sure it would pursuade them to do more. It's a shame that it would have to come with that. You may have to find another team. It's so unfair that they judge her for something she can't controll. I'm sorry that you have to go through this. The best of luck to you
