  • Should I encourage my daughter to play softball or baseball?

Should I encourage my daughter to play softball or baseball?

My daughter is very competitive. She had taken an interest in softball because some of her friends play, but now she thinks that some people feel that softball is considered to be a "girls" sport. She has taken offense to that and is now determined to play baseball. At her first day of baseball camp her and her sister were the only two girls there. Some of the boys teased them and were quite rude. I asked her if she wanted to continue and she said "I'm not going to quit. And I'm not only going to show them that a girl can play baseball, I'm going to show them that this girl can play better than them!" One side of me would like to see her show the boys up, but the dad in me is concerned for her safety. Should I encourage her with her decision or try to persuade her to go with softball instead?

You should encourage it because she is making a choice for herself to prove a point. We have had many girls play within our baseball only little league and some were very successful. She can always go back to softball later if she wants, but right now support her choice.

The biggest thing is it will make her stronger in the long run, maybe not at either sport but stronger in life. If she is being teased and it is not discouraging her and she wants to continue, let her do so. She has a goal and I am sure she will end up proving her point.

Where did she hear that Softball is a toned down version of baseball? Tell your daughter, that playing softball doesn't make her any less of a person let alone being a woman. The beauty of the sport is being with her friends and building new friendship in the team. tell her not to worry as well because there have even been major league players who can't hit softball pitches. Tell her more softball is more exciting because it's a quicker sport bec of the small diamond. she wont appreciate the sport if she's joining for the wrong reasons.

    1. I was trying very hard to figure out a way to say that without offending anyone. It was an attempt at trying to put into words the conclusion that my daughter came up with after explaining the difference between the two sports to her (her words, not mine). You touched on a very good point. I'm less concerned about what sport she plays than I am about wether she's doing it for the right reason. I'm concerned that her desire to prove a point may not be the best reason. Thank you very much for your respons!

I played baseball growing up, and I was the only girl on the team. At times it was hard but I wouldn't change any part of it. I learned so much while playing baseball, and I feel that it made me a stronger person, and all around athlete. Softball is a great sport but it should be her decision, and she should give it a shot if she wants to!

    2. Thank you Ken for these. My daughter watched and was interested in them. Especially enjoyed the one about baseball vs. softball pitch. After reading the article about Chelsea Baker we found a teaser about the ESPN show on her and watched that too.

If they are younger, then baseball is alright. As they get older though, they should be moved to softball. Baseball, is a rough sport for girls as they get older. would you want a guy throwing a 70mph pitch at your daughter? If you stick your girls in baseball, the league may have to accommodate to your girls needs which means, toning down the game for the guys.
If you really want them in baseball, try getting a lot of their friends together and starting a girls league. Don't ruin the sport for the guys.

If she wants to play baseball, let her try it for a while. Then you can sit down with her and talk about it. Tell her what you think and really tell her the true facts about softball. Listen to her side about everything too.

If she wants to play baseball I would encourage her to give it a try. There is a girl here in the Central Florida area that was just featured on ESPN. She is 13 years old and has a couple of no-hit perfect games pitching. Anything we put our minds to do we can do so I say go for it.

    1. Thanks Daniel. Ken Bergren posted an answer earlier and had a link to an article about her (Chelsea Baker). We found a teaser on youtube about the show and my daughter and I watched it. There are so many aspects to the question to consider, but ultimatly the choice will be up to her. I agree with you that any one can do whatever they put their mind to. One side of me says go kick some butt, but the dad in me knows how "boys" can be and wants to protect my little girl from that. Thanks so much for the input!

    2. You are welcome and I hope you can put her in a situation where you can guard against "boys being boys". Goood Luck to her and you.

If there is a good, copetitive fast pitch girls softball league I would recommend that route because long term that will serve her better...but if she just wants to play baseball and hang out with her friends at this age there is nothing wrong with that either. Let them have fun while learning - as they get older it becomes less fun and more work.

My sister played both LL softball and baseball and she loved baseball more. She quit softball to play strictly baseball. Said she didn't like the girl drama and she definitely did learn a lot more playing with the all boys. The baseball boys treated her like she was one of them and to this day, always talk about how well she played and pitched in baseball. I don't think she would have changed anything.
