Could folks share experiences and thoughts on introducing children to the game of golf?

I'd like to teach my nephew the game but I don't want to force him to try it or overwhelm him with information. I often wish I had started the game earlier myself.

    Hello Ross,
I know that when I was younger my dad took me out in the back yard and started by showing me how to hold and swing the club. Then after a few practice sessions he showed me how to putt the ball. After he thought I was good enough he would take me to the golf course with him to play a few rounds. The great thing was he didn't use a lot of technical terms that would confuse me. The best thing I can say is invite your nephew out to the course with you one day and see if he is interested in learning golf. If he is interested take him out to the course with you as much as you can and slowly introduce him to the game as his level of interest grows.

    1. It seems like age five or six might be a good age to start sharing the game. What do you think?

I've been told that to keep a kid interested, just let them putt. Start at 3' from the hole where they can make an occasional putt to give them a reward. As they get consistent, move them back 2 feet at a time until they get consistent at that distance. This teaches them that the goal is to get the ball in the hole and they get to taste success quickly. Once they putt well, move them to chipping and then one club at a time so they develop the short game first. They can practice most of that without having to go to a golf course and pay green fees.

I have played putt putt with my daughter from day one. Now she is 6 and I just bought her a junior golf set, she was so excited about it. We took her out this past weekend to a junior golf center and played a small par 3. I had her t-off down the fairway just outside the green after we all hit from the t-boxes. Let them hit the ball no more than 4 times to get it on the green. Once on the green she would grab her putter to put along with us on the green with farthest person away from the hole putting first. She had to abide by all the rules while on the green. I drove the cart and she rode right along and loved the entire outing. She goes with us when we practice at the driving ranges. Always keep it fun, with fun games and drills. She talks about getting lessons, so we will add that into her schedule down the road.
