Question
What is the best way to heal a hurting throwing arm in softball?
2 years ago I could throw hard easily, my arm never hurt at all. Now, it has been killing me. I havent changed my throwing style, but what is the best way to try and let my arm heal. I am a catcher so I throw quite a bit.

Hi Darby: I am a former Div. 1 collegiate fast pitch player and college coach who now owns www.femaleathletesfirst.com. Rest your arm and try icing it a couple times a day for 10-15 minutes. If it still bothers you within a week or two get it looked at by your doctor. You may have rotator cuff problems, these muscles aid in the throwing motion. I can't diagnose any injuries on-line, but if it has been hurting for awhile get it looked at. Take care of your injuries now so you can play well later. Visit my website, it is the home for female athletes on the web. You can consult with me, buy exercise programs, and get a free stretching program right off of our home page. Good Luck. Margaret

I had a rotator cuff injury from pitching softball last year. Icing it and rest were key. I also had an excellent accupressure doctor treat it a couple times a week. But it still took a while and some of the early exercises made it worse. I still do physical therapy exercises at the office some 6 months later to keep it strong. Can't wait to get back on the mound this season. Good luck!

i have torn my shoulder the best way to heal it i know i hate to say it but take a couple of weeks off to let it heal this is wat my doctor and phyical theripist told me and i hated to sit on the bench but it works and its always the best way and ill give u some advice go to an orthopedic doctor because when u go to a regular doctor they really dont now what there talking about and they usally the best doctors to go to for the shoulder

I agree. A regular doctor won't be able to diagnose the issue and provide the best treatment. Definitely see a specialist.

rest , rest , rest , and ice is right

That may be an overused injury the best way is to ice it and rest it first. and when you start using it again make sure to have proper warm-up before using it

HI LIA
I AGREE. FUNNY THING HAPPEND TO MY WIFE YEARS AGO. SHE WAS COACHING A 10 TO 12 GIRLS TEAM. FIRST COUPLE OF DAYS SHE JUST HAD THEM SPREAD AROUND IN THE INFIELD TO SEE WHO COULD CATCH GROUNG BALLS AND GET THE BALL TO FIRST BASE. ONE OF THE LITTLE GIRLS THAT WAS OUT AT SS, COULDN'T THROW THE BALL TO THE PITCHER. SHE COULDN'T THROW IT BUT ABOUT 8 FEET. AFTER HITTING THEM BALLS , THE SECOND DAY THAT LITTLE GIRL ACTED LIKE SHE WAS UP SET THE WAY SHE WAS THROWING. WE HIT HER A GROUND BALL SHE CAUGHT IT IN HER GLOVE THEN PULLED THE GLOVE OFF HER LEFT HAND AND THREW IT TO FIRST REALLY HARD AND GOOD. YOU GOT IT HER PARENTS DIDN'T WANT TO BUY HER A NEW GLOVE SO THEY GAVE HER AND OLD ONE HER BROTHER HAD USED. SHE HAD BEEN THYING TO THROW LEFT HANDED AND SHE WAS RIGHT HANDED. JUST THOUGHT I'ED SHARE THAT IT WAS SORTA FUNNY. HAPE A GOOD DAY .. ROY -
