Question
What are the best fund-raisers for our youth tackle football team?
We are trying to raise money to buy more practice gear for our team. We already do sponsorships for our weekly mail out that goes out to all the parents and relatives (like a newspaper article, and the kids love seeing their name in print just like "the pro's"...
We need to raise about $2K to get a new blocking sled, and some new balls... in the past, I just paid for it out of my own pocket, but in this economy, that ain't gonna happen this year!

We have done various things for fundraising:
1. carwashes...remember to pre-sell tickets, and generate fliers for the kids to hand out to neighbors (the copy place was generous enough to donate these for us, hopefully you can find a place that will or at least cut you a break), our local Carl's Jr. was nice enough to not charge us a fee and give us a Saturday morning...we raised a little over $600.00 for our troubles...not bad for a couple hours worth of work.
2. Snack Bars... you can do this a number of ways. At practices...have a variety of water, sportsdrinks, snacks available for purchase during practice. *This however is more effective, and less about nickel and diming the team if the practice field is in a residential area and you've got a good amount of traffic that goes to that park.
---or if you can get permission from the league run a snack stand during games, this will generate a lot of money quickly. But you will need alot of donations from the team as well as adult volunteers to run it as it will be an all day affair...we've raised over $2000.00 each time we've been allowed to do this, this was even after we subtracted expenses, we also had a parent who worked for a meat distribution company and was able to get the meat donated (that was a big help). Make sure you have everything iced down. (Our league required a fee of 10%, plus we had to get a permit from our county to do this)
3. Raffles, we've had items donated to the team like barbeque grills, mini motorcycles that raised money...about breaking even if we were to have just purchased the item ourselves. The best raffles we've done were memorabilia from the team...a football signed by the players (the smallest haul we had on that was $250.00 the largest was over $600.00) , a jersey, a mini helmet etc. Only one item per game.
4. We sold discount cards also... we got a 50% return on each one, and we ran it for a week, and made over $2000.00 on it. If you can get permission from a grocery store, have the kids and parents out there in shifts, you don't want to be hitting up friends and co-workers all the time during the season. Walmart/Sams club even has a program of matching funds up to $1000.00 if your group qualifies for their quidelines.
That's all I can remember right now without looking at my notes hopefully some of this helps.
