I'd skip the organized sports at this young age. He needs a bike, a ball, and an open space to play with Mom, Dad, siblings or friends. Go to the park! Southern California has lots of those.

I would say that soccer would be a good start for your son. It's easy to play and kids that young enjoy kicking that ball around. Around here there are may leagues and sports centers that offer soccer to kids as young at 2 so check around your local area.

soccer at his age would prob. be the best thing for both him and your family, have him play both spring and fall and no mater how it goes encourage him and be out there with him. let him play till he's 5 or 6 and then you can get him into other sports most others start at the age of 5 or 6

Soccer!
AND
A bike, a ball, and a mom or dad willing to play with him! Children grave attention with mom and dad, the people in the center of his universe. An offer to "play," whatever it happens to be, will make his day and get him off the couch! If he says no, it is because he is unsure of himself. Remember when you were little and didn't want to do something? When you went there, you had the time of your life? Of course you have, we all have! Challenge him, prod him and get him off the couch.
Soccer also a wonderful way for little ones to play in a social environment. Not only will it get him off the couch but it will expose him a whole new group of friends who will invite him over to their houses to play, etc.
So, get him off the couch, PLAY WITH HIM YOURSELF, and introduce him to soccer. BTW, run screaming from a soccer program or coach who emphasizes anything but fun and play at his age!
Good luck and if you ever need to talk, let me know!

Just be careful to not get a child involved in organized sports too early. Children's social development goes through stages. During the preschool years they tend to play parallel to each other with a lot of time spent in fantasy and free play. It isn't until the school-age years that most children are developmentally ready for structured, rule-oriented play in a team evironment. You can arrange play dates with other children. If you have a backyard, go outside and play with him. Be sure you are staying active as a family and have fun together. It's a special time for making memories together. Have you read some of the concerns of parents in this forum regarding frustration with coaching and overzealous parents? Do you really want to enter that world sooner than necessary? Preschool is a precious stage. Enjoy it with him.

I have a 4 and 5 year old grandsons who play t-ball for the YMCA. It's one night a week, they learn how to put their glove down and use two hands to catch the ball. They hit off a T and run around the bases and they learn to throw the ball as far as they can. It's sweet and simple, they don't even know they are suppose to win a game, they just go through the motions having fun and burning off energy. The best part about t-ball to them is they get a hat and a shirt, they love the coach because he gave them the hat and shirt, and the 4 year old told me when he has on the hat shirt and glove, he "looks real" He thinks he a pro!

soccer is terrific at this age -- kids love running around
4 - 5 year old soccer is so much fun!!!!
And it assists in the development of simple motor skills, creates a social gathering for the players and is terrific exercise for both the parents and players.FUN - FUN - FUN!!!

...and swimming!! How could I have forgotten that one? It's never too early, and it's such a lifesaving skill besides being lots of fun. I taught mommy and me classes for park and rec in Anaheim during college. I took for granted the availability of swimming pools for lessons in OC until I moved to Oregon. With summer right around the corner, it's the perfect time to get a 3 year old into a swimming program near your home.

I think the Swimming would be a great idea Laura! They have programs taylored to young children. I don't know if I would go with a YMCA, depending on the child this may be right for him, however, you may want to go with a more agressive program that focuses on drownproofing (these can be found at local universities). And about the soccer, we have programs around here that is organized "soccer", but it's with the parents, and intermingled with the soccer is social skills such as sharing, taking turns, etc. Check your local sports center for this type of program.

The name of the program is Lil' Kickers. They are all over so check out your area.
