it all depends for what team you play for and how big the other girls are. also if you have good talent then you need to see how you stack up against the rest of the team..Hope this helps a bit...

    1. Ok thanks! But what if it was for like the Minnesota Gophers or Michigan State..... A big school like that and most of the girls are either 6 foot or taller maybe 5'11". Is that a possibility?

    Marin,
Sorry, but the chances of a 5'8 or less player playing front row for a division one college are slim and none. There are just too many very good 6 footers playing now. However, the lower divisions are a good possibility. Don't settle for my imput here...apply, send videos and recommendations, let yourself be seen by as many of your favorite coaches as possible. 6 footers are jumping and reaching to over 10 feet. If you can do that too, what difference does your height make?

    1. Good Point!!!!! But could that person be a setter because they dont spike very often?
      Marin Kolstad · March 13, 2010
    2. The setter in a 5-1 offense has one of the most difficult blocking assignments, usually against the other teams best hitter.
      Jack Houston · March 13, 2010
    3. Ohh!!! But the only reason why people dont think short people can play front row is because they have a harder time jumping higher! Right? I mean all the person would have to do is have to jump much higher. Right?
      Marin Kolstad · March 13, 2010
    4. True. If a 5'8" player has a 36" vertical jump or higher and can reach above 10', her relative height wouldn't matter.
      Jack Houston · March 13, 2010
    5. OK.... but is that hard to accomplish because i really love volleyball and i really am hoping to stick with it..... are those heights normal for most high schools?

No, those heights are not normal..they are exceptional. That is why it is so difficult (not impossible) for a 5'8" hitter to play front row div.I college volleyball.

5'8" is pretty common. A 36" vertical jump is rare.

    1. BTW Penn State is the top school in the country for women's volleyball. and check out Jess Menden, she plays for the Minn. Gophers and at 5'8" is a setter and defensive specialist.

    4. Excellent, yes I think so at this point I think they could repeat again the only question is will they break the Miami Tennis team's record for most consecutive wins.
      Coach Balasco · March 24, 2010

They have incoming freshman Mikinzie Moydell, from Chaparral High School in Colorodo. If she's not quit ready come first game then Marika Racibarskas a sophomore will likely take the position until she is ready.
