How do i express my dissastisfaction to my daughters u12 rec coach when he asks girls to not come to games so that others can play more.....

THe coach has rquested that the girls all sign up for two or three games they won't be attending. He would only like about 11 or 12 girls to show up per game so that his job is easier in deciding who should play......

I think here are benefits to being there play time or not......

I need some supporting things to present as well as how.....
THANKS! COncerned parent!

You take it to the league representative and file a complaint. They should set him straight on participation requirements that the coaches have to follow and I would be amazed that telling some of the girls to not show up would be allowed.

In this case I just think that taking it to the coach would not go well unless you have a very delicate touch in expressing your unhappiness.

I ran a league for over 10 years and this believe it or not is not new to rec ball. As a league we decided to make the teams smaller in turn giving girls more time to play. How well do you know the coach? Does he have assistance? Does he want to win more than teaching the game? Ask yourself these questions and offer to help him. If he is not an approachable kind of person go to the rep that deals with these cases and ask that your daughter be placed on another team.
You can always volunteer to coach as well. As a friend of mine told me (after I expressed concern) "put your time where your mouth is", Back it up and get involved.
    GOOD LUCK!

Heather, I am a league director at our park and also on the board. This needs to be brought to the attention of the board, NOW! I also coach two teams a 6U team which has 12 5 and 6yr olds and a 11-16 team which has 13 girls on it. We have 5 teams and all have 13 girls. We could have a 6th team but were not going to get a "coach" that could not actually coach and help the kids. Do I want to win very much so but not at the expense of the girls. The coaches have to remember that during REC ball its about teaching the girls fundalmentals. Its time to get serious when All-Stars comes around. Good Luck!!!

This definitly need to be addressed with the coach and the league. It sounds as if the toster is too large and the coach is having a hard time getting playing time for all the girls. However this is no excuse for asking girls not to show up. Even if a girls does not play there is a lto to be learned and practiced during warm ups and watching the game. It is a team sport and the team needs to stick together. If he is having a hard time figuring out the best way to balance playing time he should ask the team. At the U12 age group it is more about playing than it is about winning no matter what level you are.

I'd show up to every single game ready to play ball. I'd sit the bench and be the best supporter of my team by showing enthusiasm and I'd help do what ever I could, the catcher's equipment, the batting line up, do stats, or keep the book, man I'd be in that game whether I was in the dirt or not!!

We have a manditory two inning rule in summer rec ball. It's difficult with just shy of another team but it's doable...absolutely...

    Think deep bench!!

I agree Lisa, I am on the softball committee in my league and we also have the same rule in our bylaws for rec that states, the starting lineup must rotate with the bench. A player shall not sit the bench in two consecutive starts. He must start every other game. Can not sit the bench more than 2 consecutive innings unless there are behavior issues, or injury.

It is rec ball and it is a time for learning to be a good sport, team development, fundamentals and discipline.

It really sounds like the coach needs to be redirected in the fact that it is rec ball. If he feels like that then maybe a travel select team should better suite him. I would make a formal complaint and bring it to the board's attention and make sure the coach is at least knowledgable about the rules for his league and that every girl paid the same amount of money to play and should all deserve the same amount of playing time but no girl should ever be asked to NOT SHOW UP. That right there is not showing good leadership.

    I wish you well

Thanks to you all for the reassurance that i am correct on this. Funny thing happened today. The girls first scheduled game is tomorrow night. Tonight we got an email from the coach stating that he had scheduled two girls to not come to the OPENING game. Later he found out two other girls would not be ABLE to attend. THis forced the coach to send an email asking the girls he had previously asked no to come ot please try and come. He understood if they could not...... Nice guy.

The situation deepens when my husband (assistant coach) asks me NOT to complain............. Sad in all of this is who misses out the most are the girls. In so many ways!

If the coach is not dissuaded into stopping the requests for his team NOT to come to games (ridiculous 'imnsho'); another option is to at least allow the full team to be there to watch the game - even if they don't dress - they should always be considered part of the team instead of being forced not to even show up.

This person does not need to be a coach in my opinion. I see this time and time again. Coaches like this are only in it for themselves. Rec ball is all about learning. You Pay You Play. Rotation for all players and keeping a log of all games to make a fair rotation is what I used when I coached my daughters teams. After her 1st two years of not playing but the mandatory two innings I stepped up to coach, since I was a player and did know the game. If a player only gets the two innings each game there is no way they can even begin to become a better ball player. My daughter was terrible when she began, but by coaching she was able to greatly improve her skills by getting her fair share or play time and improved and made her High School team. All players especially the better players need to learn how to ride the pine some, if not, they will not be able to deal with it when they do get to high school and are freshman sitting the bench. My teams did not always win games or the division, but most of the players I had went on to play and start on their respective high school teams. This should be the main goal of any rec coach, is to see the future for their players not their own egos.
