Take lessons from a qualified coach who teaches the skills in the proper progressions. Skipping the progressions can be unsafe.

Great answers so far! I will add stay _tight_ when you tumble. And work on conditioning and drills nearly every day. Counting on a single class a week to improve your tumbling is not going to cut it.

If you don't know what drills to do, google beginner tumbling drills for some ideas beyond your basic handstand and bridge rocks.

I would have to say tight proper body shapes/positions make the difference. Also, learning to pull your chest/ shoulders up quickly and tight high rebounds with arms up. For saltos, pulling up from the hips rather than pushing back the upper body. Head position is important, look at the hands in handsprings but not with saltos.
