What is the process for beginning a youth travel softball team?

I don't believe there are many travel softball teams in my area (north central Georgia). I'm just curious about the process to get one started.

Start with a coach or two. Decide how many tournaments you would like to play
in and their cost. Determine what uniforms you would like to have and cost.
Take the cost of the uniforms + tournament fees + insurance + governing body fees and
divide it by the number of players to figure out how much each player would need
to pay to be on the team. You can get sponsors and do fundraising to try and
offset this cost to the players. Have try-outs unless you knwo of 11-12 girls that
would be a good fit. Once you have a majority of your team 8-9 girls you can sign
up for the tournaments on your list. This is just the beginning and how we do it in
    the North East.

I would like to add that in addition to the individual players, you also pay attention to their parents. Travel Ball is a pretty big commitment. You will be spending a lot of time together with not only the players, you will also be spending time with their families as well.

I agree with Greg. It's a package deal when it comes to summer tournament teams.
Meet the parents and the player(s). Don't always recruit on talent alone but check
attitudes if at all possible. This will minimize issues that could come along later.

I agree with all of you! I have been doing it for 4 years and when I started my team when they were a young 12U. I did not pick the best talented girls I picked the ones who had the biggest heart, drive and desire along with commitment. But make sure you also have really good parents. Without good committed parents, not just for the money you are in for alot of bumps in the road. We do alot of fundraisers together which has allowed us to bond as adults, and the girls bond as well. Good Luck!

I would like to add that, if possible, see if you can join a local organization, so that you can utilize their network skills and community links. Maybe a nearby rec league would like to add a travel team to their toolbox.
