Back up the throw to First

Back up the throw to first made by the third baseman

Hi Coach,
I teach & preach that my right fielders head to back up a throw to first base also. I ask that they work on an angle, anticipating the ball being overthrown - hittting the fence - and heading into short right. If they are already on their way in...they have a head start on getting the ball under control and stopping the runner from advancing to second, or even more importantly they'll be in a prime spot to throw home if someone is advancing on the assumption that no one is backing up the throw to first base. All the players on the field be thinking about their back up buddies and what their responsibilities are with the position they're playing at the time. There is some place everyone should be moving toward after the ball is hit, whether it is to them or to another team mate and a place they should be to back up a partner position.
I do the mirror at left field...they should be heading in to back up third for any throws needing to head that direction.

Don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but anticipate a bad throw. I would work with all the kids on looking at opportunities to help out when things go wrong instead of being the spectator.
The challenge with outfielders is that there is a lot of running going on, with not a lot of action. Most coaches put kids in the outfield to hide them, and don't pay a lot of attention to the nuances of playing the position.
My hat is off to you for thinking about teaching the little things. The will appreciate the game a lot more.

The outfield should back-up the infield as though all infielders will miss the ball.
-
Cover the throw to first as others have already said. Then teach them what to do if the ball gets through and comes to them.
-
Yes that's what the book called "The Batter's Out" is all about.
-
Cover 1st, make sure to be at the throwing path of 3rd baseman. Make sure not to stay too close to first base just in case there is an over throw.

Back up first base, unless there is a runner at first; then he should back up second base.
-
Rightfield still should back up first base, but he backs-up second base first for the double play,(and incase thirdbase can't get the runner at second) then shifts to back-up first base as the double play is being turned. The leftfielder charges the ball behind third, then shifts to back-up second base as the throw is being made from third, to second, to first.
