That's tough to say. It really depends on the group. I had girls ages 5 - 10 (which is too big a gap, if you ask me) and the 5 yr olds were barely grasping the material while the 8 + crowd was bored.
Keep it very simple to start, and see how it goes. I think it is safe to say that most 7 yr olds will naturally pick things up more quickly than most 5 yr olds. Maybe you could have them help the younger ones so they stay engaged. You may also consider front row/back row ripples where the faster learners have a more difficult sequence of motions than the slower learners, or giving the more advanced girls jumps and tumbling to do.
Good luck! -
just do want you think is best for them

Actually depending on the rules of what your cheerleaders are allowed to do have the advanced girls do stunts and smaller girls do cheers and maybe have practice at two different times for the two groups.

Motion drills and motion technique are good areas to start with. Teach jump technique by teaching jump preps and emphasizing the landings and actual lift. Include the basic jumps like tucks and spread eagles.

I would start with motion drills first. Keep in mind how important proper warm ups are. Then add jump drills at every practice. If you do a hello cheer for the opposing team you should work on the words first then add motions, stunts, jumps, etc. to it. Here are some of my favorite cheer websites...www.mspineapple.com,www.cheerwiz.com and www.sidelinestar.com. Hope this was helpful. Good luck and remember to have fun!!

Motion drills will lay the foundation for everything you do. Every pose, every motion, every dance move, even every jump. It is the most important thing to learn. No matter what the age, I still start with motion drills in my warm ups, no matter what the level. Clean always wins.

I totally agree Kynber. I'm coaching 12 and 13 y.o.'s and we do motion drills as part of warm ups too. I made up a drill I call the star. I give it to them as "homework" at our first practice.
