We can all relate, tell us your personal story of parental sideline rage? How did you deal with it?

Coaches, referees, parents, players an fans, tell us your personal stories of aggressive parents gone bad. What did you learn from the situation? How were the children affected? What's the best form of resolution or problem solving?

I'll NEVER forget! The worst was during a rec league tournament and I called time out to "break" the other team's serve. The referee made the error and called our side to serve (one player can only get a max of five serves in rec league). A parent (other team) yelled at the ref about it. I didn't realize what was happening so I asked the parent what was wrong and he ignored me and kept screaming at the ref. The other team's coach and I discussed it and I agreed that the other team had one more serve. However, the parent got so beligerent he got up from the stands to approach the ref. The ref refused to change his call (despite our pleads) because of the parent's behavior. The man almost jumped the ref stand! The poor kids (they were 8-9 YEAR OLDS!!!!!) started crying on both teams, my girls ran behind me. My parents (well trained) kept to themselves, but were ready to grab their kids and leave. Security was called and the parent was escorted out of the building. The other coach and I were floored! Needless to say the other team couldn't get it together to play and we killed them. The ref had police protection to his car, and three years later, I'm coaching his daughter in club! We're just starting so wish me luck!!!

    Great Answer!

    1. I didn't have a single problem with sideline rage because I told the parents on DAY ONE that I was the coach and that behavior would not be tolerated in any way, shape or form. Parents sign at least FOUR different conduct forms (the more the merrier) and something written by an attorney that says that rage is not permitted and a stiff fine is issued. If they are given enough information and guidelines, the problem usually doesn't rear up. I am proud to say after coaching for so long, I have NEVER had that problem on my team.
