How do we protect young players like Ryne Dougherty from life-ending head injuries?

I recently wrote a short post on this topic. You can check it out here:

But I really want to know your advice, tips, suggestion for protecting young athletes from concussions. Do you have a personal story or experience to share regarding concussions caused in sports?

I teach my kids to not lead with their head at all times , no matter if you have the ball or making the tackle. They should play with thier head UP at all times. I have seen to many times where the opposing team has either a ball runner with his head down and heading into a hole to run in or a Defensive player put his head down and lead with it to make a tackle. All Coaches should teach thier kids to keep thier head UP and watch where they are going and keep the head out of the play as much as possible.

that is a very hard question. I suffered several concussions during sports in my high school days. back in 98-01. Just shy of a decade ago and it was always brushed off as a minor injury. My Trainer would tell me to take three days off and see how i felt. obviously head injuries have only recently been given the attention it needs in sports. I would hate to see sports start being cast in a negative light because of over-protective parents, coaches or officials. But i know as a parent, coach and official it is a very serious topic. One that needs Certified medics to inform us and help us with the process of eliminating the dangers. I know must coaches stress to the kids to keep thier heads up! I check all my player's equipment, especially thier helmits, before practice and games. You would not believe the getups i've seen. some parents aren't familiar with what goes where, or how do you know its the proper size, we should take the time to explain the equipment and its purpose. check for cracks! Don't just practice tackling techniques. teach them how to take hits. Injuries are part of sports like burns are part of fighting fires. Its eventually going to happen. All we can do is keep the players and parents informed and be aware that the kids aren't going to suggest catscans and xrays to make sure they are ok. Kids aren't gonna say hey mom/dad we should make an appointment with DR. Shmuckatelli to check this pain i'm feeling. we are the adults and we must determine if a kid is fit to play.

Proper training and education from Neurologist to coaches and trainers and players a like are key. Players need to learn to speak up and take a bigger role in their care.
